The Monteith Effect

The show must go on, and it will over at McKinley High.

The producers, cast, and crew of TV’s Glee have decided to deal with Cory Monteith’s untimely death head on, with a tribute episode this fall.

Slated for the upcoming fifth season’s third week back, the ep will deal “with writing Finn out of the show” and may be an art-imitating-life scenario that sees the character dying of a drug overdose. So we’ll probably see the actor and Finn via never-before-seen footage or outtakes.

Now, I haven’t really watched the show since the very beginning of the third season, but I think this would be a bold and surprising move. Bold because, well...if the exit’s handled poorly – which it wont   the turn of events for the character could be perceived as insensitive, and surprising because I don’t think Finn’s storyline had taken a druggy turn, right?

Again, I breathe a sigh of relief in knowing that Ryan Murphy & Co. will do nothing but their best to honor their fallen friend. As Fox President Kevin Reilly told reporters at the networks Television Critics Association Summer Tour yesterday, “Cory was a big, open, wonderful life force. Everybody loved him.” (Click here to see how Lea Michele remembered her late boyfriend earlier this week.)

To boot, drug-related PSAs featuring Murphy and members of the show’s cast will air during the hour to raise awareness about substance abuse and about resources available to those who need them.

On a related note, Reilly also revealed that he expects Glee to end after its sixth season.

“Never say never, but [that is the plan].” he said. “If we discover a new crop of kids and there’s some breakout we like.... Right now[, though], we’re thinking two seasons and conclude.
