Come this awards season, though, Matthew McConaughey will prove, in his most physically demanding role yet, that he’s a fine damn actor (something he’s been really working toward since 2011’s The Lincoln Lawyer).
So get ready then for Dallas Buyers Club, a.k.a. the film for which the Shirtless Wonder dropped out of Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
In it he stars as a real-life AIDS patient named Ron Woodroof who, back in the ’80s, stood up to the medical establishment by smuggling life-saving meds into the United States for himself and for others living with the disease. And in it he looks to be quite great.
I mean, I’m totally expecting an nomination-caliber performance, with a carefully orchestrated Oscar campaign to go with it.
McConaughey has not only the talent to go the distance on this one. He also has the charisma and the powerful A-List friends (including his Wolf of Wall Street buddies Scorsese and DiCaprio) to help him boost his odds.
Mark my words: We will be talking about this one well into next winter.
Dallas Buyers Club, co-starring Jennifer Garner and Gael García Bernal Jared Leto, is due out on Nov. 1.
