Closet Break

Actor-cum-screenwriter Wentworth Miller has (shocker?) come out of the closet.

Long rumored to be a friend of friends, the star of TV’s Prison Break and writer of last spring’s Stoker was prompted to declare himself as he declined an invitation from the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in a letter published by GLAAD.

Clearly, Miller felt he needed to take a stance regarding the anti-gay sentiment coming out of Russia in recent weeks.

“Thank you for your kind invitation,” the actor told organizers, noting his affinity for Russia as evidenced by previous visits and his holding of an academic degree in Russian ancestry. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.

The reason? An inability to, “in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

Right on, Wentworth!

Now, you will have noticed that I threw some snark up top regarding the Miller’s so-called revelation. It’s nothing but an attempt to suggest that to some folks, the guy’s being gay ain’t really news. The whisperings had it he and actor Luke Macfarlane (TV’s Brothers & Sisters) were or have been an item for a few years now. Plus, some folks even have suggested Miller is the subject of former E! Online gossip Ted Casablancas infamous – and juicy! – Toothy Tile blind item.

Regardless, I will say it again: Right on, and good for you for taking a stance and coming out on your time, guy, and for a better reason than to quiet down any silly talk about your personal life.
