R.I.P. Master Penn

American fashion photographer Irving Penn died in Manhattan this morning. He was 92.

Penn was known for his classic, minimalist style and “compositional clarity.” His subjects were never seen running or jumping and were seldom cut off.

He first shot for Vogue in 1943, and his work soon rose to prominence in the fashion and art worlds. His prints still fetch huge sums at auction, such as his nude photo of Gisele Bündchen (pictured at right), which went for $193,000 at action last year.

During his career, Penn captured everyone from world figures to artists to celebrities such as Miles Davis, Spencer Tracy, and Pablo Picasso.
