American soccer player Robbie Rogers made history yesterday.
No, not because the midfielder scored a ton of goals for the L.A. Galaxy during his first match as a member of the team.
No, he did so because by hitting the pitch in the 77th minute of a game against the Seattle Sounders, Rogers became the first openly gay athlete to play in Major League Soccer.
Best part is the footballer received an open-arms welcome from the crowd and his team. This is especially remarkable because, from what I understand, the 26-year-old had retired back in February after coming out. I presume that, perhaps, he thought no club would have him.
“I guess this is a historic thing, but for me, it was just a soccer game,” Rogers told the Associated Press after the game.
Right on!
