Cult god Joss Whedon, the amazing writer-director-producer, reportedly is thisclose to signing on to direct the upcoming Avengers movie, the mega-sequel-spin-off that will bring together Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and more Marvel superheroes.

Marvel has yet to comment on the news, but they have to make it happen. They just have to. If there’s anyone who can balance action with gravitas and wit and deliver a quality product, then that’s the Master of the Whedonverse (see Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Serenity, and Dollhouse, for mighty fine examples).
