M Chimes In

Madonna and a number of powerful women were in London earlier today for the Chime for Change: The Sound of Change Live concert.

Among those women? Gucci creative director Frida Giannini, Salma Hayek and Beyoncé, founding committee members of the Gucci-fronted initiative.

The event drew out, among others, the likes of Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Gemma Aterton, Thandie Newton, and Zoë Saldana, and featured performances by B and Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Lopez, John Legend, Florence + the Machine, Ellie Goulding, and Rita Ora.

Here M is with Humaira Bachal and journalist and Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy backstage at Twickenham Stadium, where the Queen announced plans to support girls’ education in Pakistan and Afghanistan through her Ray of Light Foundation.

During her chime, Madonna asked for contributions for a new project: the construction of a new and bigger school for Bachal’s students.

Bachal is a young Pakistani woman who overcame adversity to gain access to an education and is now focused on paying that forward for other girls to thrive as well.

M also pledged her 2-to-1 match of donations made in support of Afghan women through the Afghan Institute of Learning.

You can say what you want of Madonna, but she is a giver. Long live the Queen!
