Meet Tauriel

You know, one of the people I was looking forward to seeing pop up in last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was Evangeline Lilly.

So imagine my hella-loud harrumph when I found out that the erstwhile Kate from TV’s Lost would not arrive on screen as the new Woodland Elf Tauriel until the second part of this new trilogy from Peter Jackson & Co.

Oh well, whaddya gonna do: December is right around the bend, and on its 13th day, we will get to meet this new character in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Yes, indeed, J.R.R. Tolkien did not come up with Tauriel. Jackson and his co-writers did.

“Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard,” Lilly says. “She’s a Sylvan Elf, which means she’s of a much lower order than the elves we all became acquainted with in The Lord of the Rings. She’s [also] slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill.”

Sounds kick-ass. And potentially divisive. But Lilly is prepared for the backlash she will indubitably face once the film opens and people start to make their minds about Tauriel, and completely trusting of Jackson’s vision.

“I think if anyone anyone knows how to respect Tolkien, it’s Peter, Fran [Walsh], and Phil[ippa Boyens]. And Tauriel fits perfectly in that world.”
