Come the spring, the world will have another cinematic robot to love.
Make some room, WALL-E.
That’s because director Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, District 9) will introduce us to Chappie, an A.I. with a heart of gold.
Chappie – starring Blomkamp’s go-to, Sharlto Copley, in a motion-captured performance, as the titular robot; Dev Patel, as his creator; and Hugh Jackman, as an anti-A.I. official – will explore the topic of nature vs. nurture, in a way, since it will show us what happens when two gangsters kidnap Chappie to use him for their own benefit.
Will his inherent kindness prevail, surprising those who oppose him (namely the character that Jackman plays)? Or will he turn on those who believe in him most and lay waste to a Johannesburg (where the film is set) that is already in bad shape?
We shall find out on March 6.
