Directed by Ava DuVernay (Lee Daniels was originally set to helm), this David Oyelowo-starring film – the Interstellar bit player portrays Martin Luther King Jr. – focuses on the civil rights leader’s struggle to secure voting rights for all people, climaxing with his Alabama march from Selma-to-Montgomery, Ala., and President Lyndon B. Johnson’s (Tom Wilkinson) signing of the Voting Rights Act of ’65.
Selma – which counts Brad Pitt as a producer and co-stars Dylan Baker (TV’s The Good Wife), Alessandro Nivola, Camen Ejogo, Lorraine Toussaint (Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black), and Oprah, among others – will open for a limited, Oscar-qualifying run on Dec. 25 before going wide on Jan. 9.
