The beloved Hollywood filmmaking legend was 81, and reportedly passed away earlier tonight from complications of pneumonia after suffering a stroke.
Marshall, as your probably know, essentially gave the world Julia Roberts, whom he directed all the way to an Academy Award nomination, and superstardom, in 1990’s Pretty Woman. He also had a hand in creating and writing for TV’s The Odd Couple, Mork & Mindy, Laverne & Shirley (which starred his sister Penny), and Happy Days, among other seminal offerings.
Hard to fathom the guy never won an Emmy, huh.
Marshall’s silver-screen oeuvre includes Overboard; Beaches; the aforementioned Roberts vehicle as well as Runaway Bride, their reunion with her most iconic leading man, Richard Gere; Anne Hathaway’s The Princess Diaries and its sequel; the Lindsay Lohan effort Georgia Rule; and the holiday-themed trilogy Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, and Mother’s Day, the last of which came out this past spring.
Tenacious and star catnip ’til the end. Good for him. And for us.
