Josh Hutcherson’s sitting pretty right now thanksto the massive phenomenon known that is The Hunger Games, so it’s only fitting that Hollywood would cash in by releasing a barnacle movie to feed off that success.Enter Detention, a Joseph Kahn-directed horror comedy that wears its obvious homage-ness on its stylized sleeve (Kahn got his start directing music videos) starring the Hutch and Dane Cook and a bunch of newcomer PYTs.
The movie follows hipster-y Riley (Shanley Caswell) as she strives to survive the biggest detention of her life (it is so because it’s clashing with prom...and, y’ know...kids will be kids, so they make the most of it). The peril of the whole thing comes because, evidently, there’s a murderer out there that’s taking out her friends one by one, Scream-style.
Worst, though, the boy she likes (Hutcherson) is totally into her biggest foe.
