Sticking to What She Knows

Drew Barrymore is getting ready to step behind the camera once more – and she has lined up the perfect project as her follow-up to Whip It (she will say so, too).

The actress is set to helm How to Be Single, an adaptation of the 2008 Liz Tucillo novel about a group of New Yorkers and their dating (mis)adventures over the course of a decade.

“Love is never gonna be a tired subject,” Barrymore said. “Being single, this one definitely speaks to me, and I’ve explored it a lot in the last year and a half.

“I’m at that age where I’m sort of straddling a great line right now and I can see both sides very well.”

Although she hasn’t decided whether she will appear in the movie herself, she has decided on a timeframe for the movie: It will shoot on location this summer for a possible Valentine’s Day 2012 release.

I caught a little bit of Road to Perdition while in Denver last month, right, and then I saw I the young actor in one of his most showy scenes and I got to wondering: Where is he?

Well, turns out…he’s at MTV.

Hoechlin will star on the cabler’s Teen Wolf this summer.

Dermot Mulroney has brought together two of my favorite people for his directorial debut, the dramedy-ish Love Wedding Marriage, the story of Ava (Moore), a marriage counselor determined on fixing her parents’ (James Brolin and Jane Seymour) union.

Gung-ho as she is, though, Ava’s not noticing that all the effort she’s putting to this task she’s not putting to working on her own new marriage to Lutz’s oh-so-ripped character.

The New Crow

A new Crow is set to take flight, and Bradley Cooper just may star in the remake.

The Limitless star is thisclose to nabbing the part originated by the late Brandon Lee (which at one point was to go to Mark Wahlberg), and would be playing the murdered man who comes back as an avenging angel.

Spanish helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) signed on to direct the project last week.

Production is expected to start production this fall.

The Disciple

Joaquin Phoenix is eyeing a return to work more akin to what he was doing before I’m Still Here.

The Oscar-nominated actor has been talking to Paul Thomas Anderson about joining the religious drama the writer-director has developing that’s loosely based on the founding of Scientology.

The project a.k.a. The Master tells the story of a charismatic leader named Lancaster Dodd – who Phillip Seymour Hoffman is attached to play – who creates a new religion in the 1950s.

Phoenix would play his main disciple, an alcoholic drifter named Freddie Sutton who becomes Dodd’s closest follower only to later break away from him.

Sounds like an interesting endeavor, huh.

Cause and Effect Man

The nicest guy in Hollywood is getting complicated on us.

Tom Hanks has signed on to star in Cloud Atlas, a mindbender from the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run).

The project, based on a book by David Mitchell, is described as “an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present, and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.”

Alrighty then.

If anyone can make this watchable that’s our Hanks (not that the movie doesn’t sound intriguing…you know what I mean).

Jennifer the Beautiful

Well, it’s official: Jennifer Lopez is baaack.

The entertainer may not have gone away, alright, but her career certainly went from H-O-T to lukewarm for a little while there, didn’t it....

Now, though, thanks to her well-received judgeship on TV’s Americal Idol, a semi-successful return to Rom-comville, and a turning up of the temperature on her music career, La Lopez is once again kinda It...and she’s gracing the cover of People’s Most Beautiful Issue to prove it.

Lest you think it, though, she knows and she wants everyone to know being beautiful is part of her job.

“I don’t want anybody thinking it’s easy,” she said. “It does take time and it’s hard work. HDTV is nobody’s friend!”

Thanks for the clarification, girl. I’m sure we all feel so much better about your gorgeousness.

Among the other pretty peeps the magazine chose to highlight in 2011 are Kellan Lutz, Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Hudson, Mila Kunis, and Ryan Reynolds, among others.

Linds Gets Gotti

Lindsay Lohan (pictured at right, on the right – ha!) is once again on the brink of a comeback.

The embattled former Next Big Thing is attached to Gotti: Three Generations, a Nick Cassavetes-directed, John Travolta-starring indie about the late mob kingpin.

L2 would play Gotti’s daughter Victoria, and although she’s still in talks to join the cast officially, that didn’t keep her from attending – as a guest, not a crasher! – a press conference in New York yesterday where the powers that be announced the project.

“Lindsay is a terrific actress. I’m glad to have her here today,” said one of the movie’s producers. “We’re in talks. Nothing’s finalized.”

So I guess we’ll see if this little vehicle can bring our little Linds lost back. Travolta seems to think so.

“I know whatever she would like to do would be great,” he said.

Update 1: Well, that was quick.

A little more than a week after being part of the announcement of Gotti: Three Generations, Lindsay Lohan and the movie’s producers has ended conversations about her being involved in it.

“We are not talking any further about Lindsay playing Victoria [Gotti],” said the same producer quoted above on April 20. “She is no longer being considered. The talks have stopped.”

Her legal battles reportedly were not a issue.

Nick Cassavetes also has left the project, btw, due to a scheduling conflict with another movie.

Update 2: Just hours after leaving the Gotti project, Linds and producers saw eye to eye again, and the actress rejoined the project.

Lohan still will not be playing Victoria Gotti, though, but rather Kim Gotti, John Gotti Jr.’s wife. He deal includes a part in another movie titled Mob Street, written by Chazz Palminteri.

The Other Franco Guy

Move over, James Franco – Dave Franco is ready for his close-up.

The Oscar nominee’s brother has nabbed a part (his biggest yet, I think, although the cutie-patootie already has quite the following, thanks in no small measure to this FunnyOrDie.com video) in the upcoming big-screen, Jonah Hill-led reboot of 21 Jump Street.

Franco joins Channing Tatum and Rob Riggle in the movie, playing a popular high school kid who also happens to be a huge drug dealer.

Is it me, or is this Franco even hotter?

He Sees a Dead Woman

Daniel Radcliffe is sitting on top of the world.

The actor is thriving on Broadway at the moment. He’s becoming a hero to many. And his post-Harry Potter career – the latest installment of the franchise is a-comin’ (could we be more excited?) – is looking quite promising.

Radcliffe will follow up his turn as the most famous young wizard in the world with a supernatural thriller called The Woman in Black, playing a man sent to deal with the legal matters of a mysterious shut-in who has just passed away. Who begins to experience unexplained events and potential hauntings.

As he would in that kind of scenario, right?

The movie, which is based on a 1983 book by Susan Hill that was turned into a made-for-TV movie and play in Britain, co-stars Ciarán Hinds and Janet McTeer.

Running Wild and Looking Pretty...Then

You haven’t read the last of young Carrie Bradshaw.

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell has penned a follow-up to her successful Carrie Diaries, the young-adult title that explored our favorite fashionista’s earlier years.

Summer and the City is set to be released on April 26 and will follow Carrie as she spends her first summer in Manhattan and tell the story of how she met Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda.

Bushnell, who has called the experience of writing these young-adult tomes “exciting and rewarding,” is planning on writing at least two more entries for the Bradshaw cannon.

Pence Rises

He was in The Social Network…you just didn’t really see him.

Josh Pence played the body of one of the Winklevoss twins with Armie Hammer in last year’s hit, but his face was not seen on film – only Hammer’s was.

Nevertheless, his contribution was noted (especially after a Google search).

Now Pence has been cast in The Dark Knight Rises as a young Ra’s Al Ghul, the villain played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins. He will be seen in flashback scenes reaching back 30 years.

Good for you, hottie.

The model-cum-actor is on the rise, alright, and will next be seen in Battleship opposite Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, and Neeson.

GLAAD for La Cheno et al.

Kristin Chenoweth received the Vanguard Award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation over the weekend, joining Ricky Martin as folks recognized by GLAAD for their work and advocacy on behalf of the LGBT community this year.

Ever the life of the party, La Cheno even made out with Sean Hayes, her Promises, Promises co-star, who presented her with award.

Also honored at the 22nd Annual Media Awards ceremony in L.A. last night were Glee and Modern Family, which tied for Outstanding Comedy Series, and I Love You Phillip Morris (Outstanding Film – Limited Release).

The final awards for 2011 will be presented next month in San Francisco.

Tobey Maguire is set to reteam with his Ice Storm director for the adaptation of Yann Martel’s best-seller about the titular boy who is stranded in a life boat on the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger.

The film is set to arrive in theaters in December 2012.

Going Small

Katherine Heigl is returning to the tube, although, well…it’s not TV the actress has her sights on – it’s HBO.

The former Grey’s Anatomy doctor will produce and star in an original movie based on Ann Hood’s best-selling The Knitting Circle. The semi-autobiography revolves around a mother mourning her young daughter and struggling to keep everything together (including her marriage).

Playwright Craig Wright (the man behind the short-lived TV guilty pleasure Dirty Sexy Money) is handling the adaptation.

And We Have Us a Zod

Zack Snyder’s forthcoming Superman movie has found its villain.

Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon will face off against Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel as General Zod in Superman: Man of Steel (title TBC, btw).

“Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman others don’t,” Snyder said. “Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”

Shannon joins a star-studded cast that includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents.

Girl with the Killer Instinct

Saoirse Ronan, the Academy Award-nominated actress who so dazzled audiences and critics with her breakthrough turn in Atonement, has reunited with her director from that film, Joe Wright, for the action thriller Hanna, a very fairy-tale-esque story about a girl who comes of age while facing some pretty fearsome foes.

Hanna is a lovely teenaged girl raised by her father (Eric Bana) in the wild forests of Finland.

She’s a special one, that Hanna – she can fend for herself quickly and strongly and ably...she’s fast, strong, and good with a bow and arrow...she speaks several languages.

And she can kill anyone who crosses her path without giving them a second thought.

Her father, you see, is an ex-CIA agent named Erik Heller who has been in hiding for years, training his daughter for one very special mission: to find and kill Marissa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett), an icy bitch of a former colleague who played a pivotal part in the Hellers’ past.

They lead a secretive, isolated life just below the Arctic Circle. And, as he naturally would, Erik may be keeping some secrets, too – secrets about Hanna’s origin. Before he cuts her loose, we know he is trying to protect her (we don’t find out why, exactly until much, much later, natch), and that sending her into the wild, wild world is and always has been part of the plan.

So we with the literal push of a button, Hanna kicks into a faster, more pulsating gear (scored by The Chemical Brothers), with Erik feeling “the peoples” that are coming to get them, and Hanna being brought into (the rest of) the world, captured by them. Or is she?

The girl is a lethal one, remember, so she carries out her mission, only she, unbeknownst to her, she hasn’t – Marisa’s still alive (the trailer gives this away, ergo my lack of Spoiler Alert). She escapes, embarking on a get-to-know-yourself kinda journey across Europe, meeting folks, at last, and interacting with them...listening to music for the first time in her life.

She’s also a feral one, and the script has a little bit of fun with these culture-shock moments, and thus the movie slows down just a tad so it’s not all about killing and revenge but about Hanna and the revelations that will illuminate her past and shape the rest of her life.

Hanna walks this fine line nicely, utilizing action sequences wisely. There doesn’t seem to be any willy-nillyness here, and I think I appreciated that the most. That, and Ronan, who pierces the screen with her beautiful, magnetic blue eyes. I left the theater impressed by how she turned a character we’ve seen a lot in many media and made it a fully realized one. Yeah, she's bad, for all intents and purposes, but you root for her. That’s a nice accomplishment always (for an actor and a project).

Ronan holds her own alongside Bana and against Blanchett (who remains a wicked cypher, but an effective one throughout) and – gasp! – made me think she’d make a worthy Buffy Summers should the powers that be insist on rebooting her for the big screen.

Man Makeover

Steve Carell is kicking off his post-Office career with what looks like a winner.

That the actor’s upcoming movie features an oh-so-stunning-and-good-to-look-at Ryan Gosling...well, that’s just all kinds of silver-screen awesomeness.

I mean, how much am I – are we – going to watch and enjoy Crazy, Stupid, Love (a comedy, of course, in which the almost-erstwhile Michael Scott plays a mopey divorcé, and Gosling plays the suave man about town who gets him out of his funk) when it opens on July 29?

Oh, and that the movie also features Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, and Kevin Bacon, too...well, that’s just the cherry on top.

I Would Let Him Catch Me

Kristen Stewart is a lucky gal.

Everyone knows – OK...says – she’s dating Robert Pattinson. Her career is on fire thanks to The Twilight Saga. And now Hugh Jackman is set to (maybe) chase after her?

Urgh.

In any case, yeah, the Aussie is reportedly at the top of the list to play the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman, (a.k.a., the Snow White movie with Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen).

The role at one point was supposed to go to Viggo Mortensen (Michael Fassbender also had been rumored to be up for it).

Jackman certainly has the physique for it, right?

And provided his instead-of-doing-the-Wolverine sequel performing gig next month doesn’t like, get in the way I think this could become official quite soon. As well it should. I mean...Jackman, in a forest, with a big ax? Hello!

A Man in Distance and Time

Jake Gyllenhaal gets blown up quite a bit in Source Code.

Gyllen-yum plays two men...well, no...more like...uhh...a man with two ident...no, wait. He plays a man taking on another’s identity in an alternate universe in this mind-boggling thriller directed by Duncan Jones, the helmer of the well-liked 2009 offering Moon.

I’m making my head hurt thinking about this all over again – in the best way.

Alright, here I go again.

Jakey-bear plays Colter Stevens, a decorated chopper pilot who wakes up in the body of another man, a Chicago-area teacher named Sean Fentress. Sean is a passenger on a commuter train. He’s sitting across from Christina, a beautiful woman named played by Michelle Mongahan. They seem to know each other. But Sean, or make that Capt. Stevens, is rather confused and for the next few moments he tries to make sense of what is going on.

Then, the train blows up.

Capt. Stevens wakes up elsewhere, though. He’s in some sort of capsule, surrounded by monitors. Someone’s talking to him, prompting him to remember what he saw. That someone is Goodwin, a field officer of some sort played by Vera Farmiga. She wants to know if he found the bomber...if he knows who’s behind this attack because another attack is imminent and he is the only one who can prevent it.

The good ol’ captain is part of a super-sophisticated and experimental mission that enables him to plug into the last eight minutes of a person’s life using this cutting-edge “Source Code,” right, a program invented by a Dr. Rutledge (Jeffrey Wright). Capt. Stevens doesn’t seem to recall signing up for this assignment, but he’s got his marching orders, and he will see it through, if anything because he’s taking a liking to Christina...even if it means going back time after time. He has grows fond of this woman and he wants to save her as much, if not more than he wants to be a good soldier.

With the clock ticking – and, as it would happen – the powers that be explain that the real reality cannot be altered...that Christina is dead, that Sean is dead, that Capt. Stevens has a mandate, a very specific thing to do.

Throughout the course of the movie we find out what’s in store for him (of, if you’re smart like me, you’ll figure some of it out halfway through – and remain at the edge of your seat, anyway). The science of it all may leave you scratching your head, but the joy of looking for clues, not to mention the sheer excitement of seeing Gyllenhaal (try to) save the day, should keep you engrossed by the whole ingenious thing and completely satisfied.

Making the Apocalypse Sound Like Fun

Britney Spears has done it again.

After the misstep – IMHO – that was the “Hold It Against Me” video, the pop tart has delivered a follow-up worthy of the Spears cannon.

The video for “Till the World Ends” is definitely more Spears-esque. It’s giving me major “I’m a Slave 4 U” vibes. It features a wavy-haired Britney (always a plus).

There’s a bit of a salute to “Oops!...I Did It Again” (it’s the red bodysuit).

And although she seems to have run away from the rhythm that once got her, girlfriend at least looks like she’s in tune with the song a little more than with the lead single of her Femme Fatale.

Keep putting stuff like this down, Brit-Brit, and I will pick it up.

Evil Ringleader

James Marsden has found quite the meaty party into which to sink his teeth.

The actor will trade the shiny roles for which he has become famous and oh-so-lusted after for a really dark one: that of Charles Manson (how very Ryan Kwanten of him).

Marsden will headline the upcoming The Dead Circus, which will follow the case of singer Bobby Fuller, whose death, though ruled a suicide, raised suspicion of foul play and potentially murder.

The still-in-the-works script reportedly will focus on allegations that Manson and his Manson Family were behind the murder.

Michael C. Hall (Showtime’s Dexter) will play one of Fuller’s managers, while Oscar winner Melissa Leo will take on the role of a former Manson Family member.

Stooge-d

It really, totally is bye-bye time from the long-gestating Three Stooges movie for Jim Carrey, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn.

Will & Grace MVP Sean Hayes will play Larry in Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s feature about the beloved characters doing their thing in a modern-day setting, opposite MadTV alumnus Will Sasso, who will portray Curly.

Moe has yet to be cast.

The Farrelly brothers are reportedly ready to start shooting later this month, so an announcement is pretty imminent.

The Smiths at the End of the World

Father-and-son duo Will and Jaden Smith are going to make it a family affair for their new project.

The Pursuit of Happyness co-stars will…uh…co-headline a sci-fi flick to be directed by once-hot-now-not helmer M. Night Shyamalan, a project f.n.a. 1000 A.E. about a boy 1,000 years in the future navigating an abandoned Earth trying to save himself and his estranged dad.

“The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project,” Shyamalan said.

Ha! I would’ve guessed the chance to make something people would probably flock to the theater to watch (after The Happening and The Last Airbender) would be a dream project.

In any case: And so the Smith baton is passed right before our eyes….

Strange Desire

Patrick Dempsey wants to be a superhero.

The Grey’s Anatomy star is very interested in playing Dr. Strange, a Marvel Comics character reportedly set to make the leap from the comic-book page to the big screen.

“I’ve been lobbying for that,” Dempsey said. “There’s a whole bunch of people [among his Grey’s Anatomy crew] who are into comics and Marvel, too, on the set, and they’re like, ‘Doctor Strange, that’s the one you should do.’ It would be fantastic. It’d be a great TV show, especially for HBO or something like that.”

Well, the project has greater designs.

Disney, Marvel’s parent company (and also that of ABC, a.k.a. Dempsey’s current employer), already has writers working on a Dr. Strange movie, and rumor has it the company is quite keen on him playing the role, anyway, so all this peacocking may very well moot.

Up next for Dempsey is the Transformers threequel.

Renner Getting Bourne-d?

It seems Hollywood has found its newest action star in Jeremy Renner.

The Oscar nominee (The Hurt Locker, The Town) is already being groomed to take over the Mission: Impossible franchise, and now it seems his the frontrunner to step into Matt Damon’s shoes in the Bourne series, although he’d be playing his own character.

As longtime Bourne player Tony Gilroy, who’s set to direct The Bourne Legacy, said last fall, “This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.

“The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive.”

Renner seems like a nice, solid choice. As long as we see Jason Bourne again at some point, and the new movies don’t rehash what we’ve already seen, I think this could go on and on.

The Games Find Their Guys

Josh Hutcherson and that yummy Liam Hemsworth (pictured here) will be playing The Hunger Games with Jennifer Lawrence.

Sorry, Hunter Parrish.

Hutcherson (The Kids are All Right), who lobbied hard for his role, and Hemsworth (The Last Song) will play Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, respectively.

Peeta is the character that accompanies heroine Katniss Everdeen into the 74th annual Hunger Games as the male tribute chosen from their native District 12, the most remote and marginalized district of all the subjugated districts of Panem. He is love with Katniss and says as much outside the games, which complicated everything with his supposed arena rival.

Katniss and Gale, on the other hand have never had a romantic relationship, but they do share a transcendent bond, often of few words. When Katniss volunteers to participate in the games in her younger sister’s stead, they both presume that bond will carry her far through the horrors she will face in the arena, and they each silently hope they’ll be reunited in safety on the other side of the ordeal.

Somehow I think, never having ready the Suzanne Collins’ books upon this new franchise is based, that Hemsworth should play Peeta…but maybe Gale is the one for Katniss?

Who knows…. I’m just curious now, so I’ll wait until The Hunger Games opens next March to find out what happens.

True Hero

He’s sexy, he’s funny…he’s a hero?

True Blood star Ryan Kwanten reportedly got his Good Samaritan on last week when he assisted an injured man in Hollywood while bystanders looked around doing nothing.

The story goes the actor was driving his car through busy intersection when he spotted the bloody and injured lying in the middle of the street. A witness says Kwanten got out of his car, tore his T off, and raced over to see if he could help.”

OK – so the T-shirt part didn’t happen, but wouldn’t it had been too cool if it had?

The up-and-comer joins a cast that already includes Armie Hammer as the Prince and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen.

Tarsem (The Cell) Singh is directing the project titled Brothers Grimm: Snow White.

Just when you’re starting to think the last standing Golden Girl is taking a break, she goes and surprises ya with the announcement of another project.

That’s right, beeyotches: This is Betty White’s world – we’re just living in it.

The 89-year-old It Lady has signed on to host Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, a new, 12-ep, hidden-came reality-TV offering from NBC.

“People have been telling me that I’m ‘Off My Rocker’ for years,” the lovely said. “Now I can prove it.”

The show will follow seven seniors who play pranks on unsuspecting young’uns. Hilarity ensues.

You go, Betty, with your bad, funny self!

Jonathan Groff just made Gleeks’ day.

The actor is set to reprise his role as the duplicitous Jesse St. James during the last three episodes of TV’s Glee this season.

The Vocal Adrenaline frontman will be “back to apologize to [Lea Michele’s] Rachel [for infiltrating New Directions with some oh-so-cruel intentions],” an insider said, “and, perhaps, get her back.”

And so the plot thickens for Finn (Cory Monteith) to make his move, huh….

We all know the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys are going on tour together this summer as NKOTBSB – and still not coming to Miami.

Uh…WTF is up with that, guys?

In any case, the mega-group has dropped their first joint effort, a single called “Don’t Turn Off the Lights,” that’s a delicious pop throwback with a modern twist.

And you know what, NKOTBSB – I would likey even more if you brought your act to town so I could hear it live.
