Pretty Deadly Mars

They put this one together real fast, huh.

Guess they knew they should strike while the Deadpool-was-a-hit iron was hot.

All glibness aside, I’m talking about Life, a space-set thriller about finding, well...life on Mars, and how said life just might try to take yours. Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and The Girl on the Train’s Rebecca Ferguson star.

Safe House’s Daniel Espinosa directed the movie, which is set for release next Memorial Day weekend.

Check its trailer now.

When Love Goes Bump in the Night

Amy Adams.

Jake Gyllenhaal.

Kim Basinger.

And The Birth of a Nation’s Armie Hammer.

They are all taking part in designer-turned-film auteur Tom Ford’s next cinematic effort, the thirstily awaited festival darling Nocturnal Animals, a sure-to-be-captivating-and-beyond-stylish offering scheduled to arrive in select cities on Nov. 18 before going wide on Dec. 9.

Adams stars as a Los Angeles gallery owner haunted by a novel written and sent her way by her ex-husband (the Gyllen-yum) due to its thriller-like violence, which she interprets as a veiled threat and a tale of fulfilled symbolic revenge. Check out the film’s trailer now (Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Laura Linney, and Birdman’s Andrea Riseborough all co-star) – and, maybe...perhaps, try to read Tony and Susan, the Austin Wright book that inspired Ford in the first place, before the movie comes out?

I know I’m going to try to.

Wild Parents

What a showcase of friendship!

Real-life BFF – I’m pretty sure that he went to her wedding to Marcus Mumford and that they’re all like, tight – Jake Gyllenhaal and Carey Mulligan are gonna be there for actor Paul Dano when he makes the transition to feature-film director.

The Swiss Army Man star is going to produce and helm his first movie, a period drama titled Wildlife based on the eponymous 1990 Richard Ford novel, the script for which he adapted with actress-writer Zoe Kazan, his real-life girlfriend, who also will executive produce the project.

The film will tell the story of a teenaged boy who sees how his parents’ marriage falls apart after the family moves to Montana.

I suppose Jakey-bear and Mulligan will portray the warring husband-and-wife duo. No word on who the lucky – ha! – young man will be that co-stars opposite them yet.

Son of Cop

Another week, another bit o’ Jake Gyllenhaal news.

Fine by me!

Jakey-Bear is going to reunite with Denis Villeneuve, who directed him in Enemy and Prisoners, to work on an adaptation of The Son, the popular crime novel by Jo Nesbo.

The story will center on a once-promising 15-year-old wrestler whose career goes off the rails after the suicide of his cop-father. Like, the guy ends up in prison, hooked on heroin.

There, though, our protagonist learns some long-hidden truths about his father’s death, so he escapes and gets to huntin’ those responsible for his wrongful sentence.

Update: Well look who is trying for videogame-adaptation success again.

The Gyllen-yum – who gave it a try six years ago with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, is going to produce and star in the Ubisoft title Tom Clancy’s The Division, a story set in a dystopian New York City in which a group of people is tasked with IDing the cause of a viral outbreak.

One Sunday in the Park with Jakey-bear

Jake Gyllenhaal’s big theater dreams keep coming true.

The Gyllen-yum has been tapped to play the lead role in a one-off concert performance of Sunday in the Park with George on Oct. 24. You know, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Stephen Sondheim play, all for the benefit of the New York City Center.

Jakey-bear – who last summer starred in the New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Center production of Little Shop of Horrors – will play painter Georges Seurat in his artistic struggle leading up to the completion of his “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

Click here for tickets to the show, which are $75. If you care to buy a table, then you better start saving now. Table prices range from $2,500 to a whopping $150,000 – for which, I would hope, one would get a kiss from the actor himself!

Going Mars, Too

Well now this!

Jake Gyllenhaal is going to co-star in Life with Ryan Reynolds.

The Gyllen-yum will – oh, stop. I can’t do it. I mean, it’s gonna be Jakey-bear and R2.

Let’s all take a moment to sit with that.

Alright. I am back.

A thriller set on Mars, the Daniel Espinosa-directed project will follow a group of intergalactic space researchers (Rebecca Ferguson is also on board, btw) who find life on the planet that most recently hosted Matt Damon.

Perhaps, Gyllenhaal’s hoping some of Reynolds’ blockbuster Deadpool sheen will rub off on him?

Ahem. I...could make a real dirt joke right about now.

Anthology Jake

Jake Gyllenhaal is thinking TV.

But just as a producer. For now.

See, the Gyllen-yum is helping to develop a new anthology series for A&E, of all places. The project will focus on a different American cult persona with each passing season, because why not: Let’s keep revisiting all these bad seeds that were good for a show, you know (hey, O.J., hey!), rather than educate audiences on the virtues of folks who have had or are having a positive impact on society.

Season 1 will center on a Jim Jones, the man who led more than 900 people to take their own lives in the Jonestown Massacre of ’78.

He sounds like a peach that I simply must Google.

Not.

Life in Pieces

This coming spring, Jake Gyllenhaal will try to cope.

See, the Southpaw star is headlining Demolition, Jean-Marc Vallée’s follow-up to Wild and the story of an investment banker trying to understand and get over his emotional disconnection to his life following the tragic death of his wife, only to be saved by a woman he meets by chance.

Naomi Watts is playing his savior, a mystery wrapped in a bit of an enigma for now, from the looks of the film’s first trailer.

Demolition will arrive in theaters on April 18.

The Becks the Sex(iest)

What...a sexy, obvious, vintage, easy to choice to make, People.

David Beckham has been named the Sexiest Man Alive for 2015. Because clearly.

While some may argue that the Becks is years overdue for the honor – the guy has proven he has what it takes to wear the crown on and off the pitch, time and time and time again – all I have to say is better late than never.

Seriously, this couldn’t have happened to anyone more deserving.

Sorry, Justin Timberlake, Idris Elba, Jussie Smolett, and Jake Gyllenhaal – maybe next year!

Okja Man

Jake Gyllenhaal is determined to keep things interesting.

The Gyllen-yum has joined the cast of Okja, Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho’s next film, a monster movie that already has Tilda Swinton, Love & Mercy’s Paul Dano, Kelly MacDonald (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire), and Bill Nighy on board.

The search is on for a Korean leading lady, which has me thinking: Doona Bae – hello! The star of Netflix’s Sense8 would be awesome.

Electric Dude(s)

Black Mass’ Benedict Cumberbatch (obviously pictured here) and Everest’s Jake Gyllenhaal are going to....

Yeah, I can’t even finish that sentence without acknowledging my excitement. I am excited.

I mean, the Cumber-stud and Jakey-bear in a movie together? Yes, please!

The actors are circling The Current War, a drama set in the 19th century about the feud over the future of electricity. The Gyllen-yum would play George Westinghouse, while Cumberbatch would portray Thomas Edison.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) is considering calling the shots from behind the camera.

Shopkeeper of Horrors

Jake Gyllenhaal’s dream of being in a musical is finally coming true.

The Nightcrawler star – who got thisclose to being in Into the Woods (and has long, well...longed to get a movie adaptation of Damn Yankees off the ground) – is going to take part in a new staging of Little Shop of Horrors in New York City this summer.

One of the show’s original cast members, Ellen Greene, also will hit the boards for this one (the actress will reprise her role as Audrey), as will SNL’s Taran Killam.

The New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Center production of Little Shop of Horrors, featuring Jakey-bear as Seymour, will run July 1-2. Click here for tickets.

The Thick of the Ring

The light heavyweight champion of the world.

His loving family.

His short fuse.

It all proves to be a bad combo for Jake Gyllenhaal before he pulls it together in the upcoming Southpaw, a Kurt Sutter-written, Antoine Fuqua-helmed story of redemption that, yes, will feature the Gyllen-yum all ripped to shreds and s--- but that also will give us another reason to admire the Oscar-nominated actor for his chops. Just like he likes it best.

Check out the film’s intense first trailer now:

Southpaw – co-starring Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, and Naomie Harris – is due out on July 31.

Not Into the Squad

Hit a snag much?

The Suicide Squad movie is having a bit of a tough time finding its new Rick Flag in the wake of Tom Hardy’s departure from the production.

Rumor had it the powers that be were looking at Jake Gyllenhaal to replace Hardy as the elite soldier-character, but the Gyllen-yum reportedly has said thanks, but no thanks.

Who shall it be, who shall it be?

We better find out soon because Suicide Squad – starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis – is meant to start shooting in April for an August 2016 release.

In Fighting Shape

Hot dayum, Jake Gyllenhaal!

The Gyllen-yum is back in Prince of Persia territory, shape-wise, to play Billy “The Great” Hope, a left-handed junior middle weight champ who loses it all in a personal tragedy and then is forced to fight his way to redemption, in Southpaw.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film was written by Kurt Sutter (FX’s Sons of Anarchy) and is due out for release next year.

Jakey-bear reportedly packed on 15 lbs. of muscle for the part, so, you know...Awards Bait Alert!

The Snow Man

Well, these two must have liked working together on Southpaw.

Jake Gyllenhall and Antoine Fuqua are getting ready to do it again, as the star and director of The Man Who Made It Snow.

The project will revolve around Max Mermelstein, the real-life Jewish hotel engineer who played a key role in turning Pablo Escobar’s small-time Medellin-based cartel into a billion-dollar enterprise.

Fuqua and the Nightcrawler also will serves as producers on the film, so let’s def go ahead and start referring to this one as a labor of love for them, OKRRR.

Meet Louis Bloom

Remember how last year Jake Gyllenhaal got all skinny (and greasy!) for his art?

It was all in the name of his part in Nightcrawler, this Dan Gilroy-directed indie thriller about an L.A. man (possibly a small-time criminal – I’m no longer entirely sure that is correct) who gets swept up in the city’s night-dwelling crime journalism community.

Check out this meta promo for the film, featuring the Gyllen-yum (who favored this project over the Into the Woods adaptation that is coming out this December) in character as said man, the oh-so-eager – and intense – Louis Bloom:

Nightcrawler, co-starring Bill Paxton and Rene Russo, is due out on Oct. 17.

Demolition Man

I think Jake Gyllenhaal’s going through a moody period.

His 2013 title Prisoners was bleak stuff. And it’s not like his Enemy this past spring was not a walk in the park. Plus, there was that whole injured-on-set situation while shooting October’s intense-sounding Nightcrawler last year.

And now Jakey-bear’s spoilin’ for some Demolition time.

Which means that he’s only looking to star in this new Black List film from writer Bryan Sipe that Dallas Buyers Club’s Jean-Marc Vallée is going to direct. It’s the story of an investment banker trying to understand and get over his emotional disconnection to his life following the tragic death of his wife (only to be saved by a woman he meets by chance).

Looks like someone’s (smartly) working quite hard on mid-range-y movies that could also serve as awards bait....

Naked on Everest

OMG, there is a God…and he just let us catch another glimpse of Jake Gyllenhaal’s ass.

See, Jakey-bear is hard at work shooting Everest, right. And, evidently, the movie has required that he get naked.

For a pivotal scene, I reckon.

And I love it.

Look at that tush.

Gyllen-yum, indeed.

Now, if only the pap who took this had gotten a frontal shot so we could see just how well the actor can fill that taped pouch of penis....

Double the Jake!

OMG, Denis Villeneuve is a genius.

Not only did he give us the beyond-intense Prisoners last year, he recruited one of the stars of that film (Jake Gyllenhaal) to lead his next, Enemy, and made sure to double our fun.

How?

By having the Gyllen-yum play two parts: that of a man – duh! – and that of his doppelgänger, whom he spots while out at a movie.

But Enemy will not be. It doesn’t sound, from anything I have read about the film, that a reunion between these two fellas was ever meant to take place.

Enemy will be available on demand on DirecTV starting on Feb. 6 before opening in select theaters on March 14.
