Explaining Some of His Truth

Empire, Fox’s massive hit this winter, has made a star outta Jussie Smollett.

Smollett plays Jamal Lyon on the show. You know, Lucious and Cookie Lyon’s (Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson) gay cub, the one who recently came out in spectacular, public fashion.

In a case of life imitating art, the actor officially came out, to Ellen DeGeneres after a taping of her show, because he thought it was, “really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet. There’s never been a closet. That I’ve been in.

After joking that he has a dresser (ha!), Smollett stressed that he has a home that he wants to protect, which is why he chooses not to talk about his personal life with the media. His one concession, though, is to admit, for lack of a better word, that there is no closet for him, and that he wanted to, “make that clear at this time in the world.

Good for him for speaking his truth in his own way and in his own time.
