Keep Your Strength, Andy

The Aussie, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma earlier this year, planned to go back to work on the Starz series’ second season after he was declared in remission over the summer.

He has been advised, however, to resume “aggressive treatment” for the disease.

“It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved,” the actor said in a statement. “It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you for the support so far.”

Starz has not made any decisions regarding the future of the series, but has extended “our concern and support to Andy and his family. We will address our programming plans at some later date.”

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, a prequel to the series, will debut early next year.
