The Artemisia of War

Sullivan Stapleton is no Gerard Butler (not that there’s anything wrong with that). And the camera loves Eva Green.

Those are the important lessons I learned watching – not in unnecessary 3-D – the prequel-sequel to Zack Snyder’s 300, 300: Rise of an Empire.

The movie’s yet another visual treat. Oh-so-stylized and beyond-packed with phenomenal pecs and abs too unreal to believe, and too sexy not to look at (to the detriment of anything in the way of like, y’ know, actually following the story, which unfolds before, during, and after the events of the first film).

We see that before Spartan King Leonidas (Butler) and his men held their own at Thermopylae, Xerxes (a returning Rodrigo Santoro), the God-King of Persia was the chump son of King Darius, killed in battle by the Athenian archon Themistocles (the strapping Stapleton, from Cinemaxs Strike Back). Xerxes was remade by Artemisia (a ferocious Green) into the imposing figure we met previously as a means for her to get her revenge against the Greeks, who did unspeakable things to her as a child, and to avenge her king, of course (’cause Darius favored her over Xerxes).

We see Artemisia take to the Aegean Sea to bring her wrath to Greece, which stands splintered, much to the chagrin of Themistocles, a uniter who seeks Leonidas’ help in defeating their common enemy. Too bad he is disdainfully told, by Queen Gorgo of Sparta (Lena Headey, from HBOs Game of Thrones), that Leonidas is fine going at it alone…and that Athenians should tend to their house on their own.

Big mistake, as we found out in 300.

And we see what ensued for Themistocles and his men: epic naval engagements that, sure, give the ones on land from the first film a run for their money but become repetitious after a while.

300: Rise of an Empire probably will be another hit, and it will be so because of its enticing production values, none better or more non-CGI-real than Green, much to the woe, I am sure, of Stapleton. She is the movie. She commands it as if it were her own armada, and it is at its indisputably best when she is on screen (sorry, S2 – you know I like ya), all raven-haired and smokey-eyed in her murderous and sultry McQueen-esque leather-and-gold ensembles.

She puts the art in Artemisia’s situation, which in turn puts the good in the movie. So check it out for all of its obviousness, but enjoy for Green, OKRRR.

My Rating **1/2

The Look of Grace

It looks like at long last, we will be seeing Grace of Monaco.

After the film opens the Cannes Film Festival in May, that is.

But, do no fret, Olivier Dahan’s Nicole Kidman-starring account of the American actress-turned-European monarch’s glamorous life and untimely death is a-comin’ (the film was originally scheduled to open last fall), and now we have a full first trailer as a token of proof.

So keep an eye out for Grace of Monaco…some time after Cannes.

Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt the Actress

Angelina Jolie is no Dina Lohan Will Smith stage mom.

So don’t y’all get it twisted.

La Jolie made sure we got that when she spoke to Entertainment Weekly for the magazine’s cover story on her upcoming Maleficent, you see. The question came up when the topic of conversation turned to the casting of her daughter Vivienne Marcheline, who is now 5, in the blockbuster, as a super-young Princess Aurora.

“We think it’s fun for our kids to have cameos and join us on set, but not to be actors. That’s not our goal,” the actress told the magazine, referring to her parenting style with partner Brad Pitt. His World War Z, for instance, featured a blink-and-you-miss-it – I did! – cameo by one of the older Jolie-Pitt boys, for instance. Either Maddox or Pax. I simply cannot recall at the moment. Although I wanna say it was Pax.

“[What happened on Maleficent is] the other 3- and 4-year-old [performers] wouldn’t come near meIt had to be a child that liked me and wasn’t afraid of my horns and my eyes and my claws.

So it had to be Viv.

Well that sounds sensible enough. So worry not, girl.

As a reminder, Maleficent will arrive in theaters on May 30.

Head of the Band

Well, what…an interesting turn of events.

I was so looking to seeing Michael Fassbender get his rocker on as, ahem, an enigmatic rocker in the upcoming Frank – but I did not see this coming.

By which I mean I did not expect not to see the Fass at all.

Because he like, wears a papier-mâché head all throughout the Sundance-approved indie.

Oh yeah. Is there any doubt the Oscar-nominated 12 Years a Slave star is one of the most interesting actors out there now?

Anyway, in FrankDomhnall Gleeson (About Time, which, btw, is so good) plays an up-and-coming musician who joins Fassbenders character's band of traveling, ahem, characters, which includes Frankfearsome right-hand woman on and off the stage (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

Check out the trailer now, and make sure you visit with Frank starting on May 9 (in the U.K., at least).

Burke’s Back

It has been a long while since we last saw Isaiah Washington’s Dr. Burke on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy, and while I never thought we’d see the actor back on the show again after he got sacked in 2007 following that nastiness that went down with T.R. Knight, we will see him again.

As Dr. Burke.

On Grey’s Anatomy.

As early as this spring.

Washington will revisit Seattle Grace Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in May to play a part in Sandra Oh’s farewell episode.

“It’s important to me that [Oh’s] Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” said the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes“Burke is vital to that journey – he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.

While the feminist in me is cringing a little bit about what this could mean, I am looking forward to seeing this one play out.

And, hey…if Justin Chambers ever leaves the show, then maybe Katherine Heigl can come back then as well? That is, if she is still open to the idea at the time and/or not too busy.

It’s Dinobots Time

Seems the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction is a game changer.

It says right there in the poster, right underneath Mark Wahlberg, who is the franchise’s new star.

Why?

’Cause the Dinobots are coming out of the dirt! And it’ll be up to Optimus Prime and his metallic buds to save Earth (once again?) from those old relics…or for them to partner up with our heroes to save the planet from those pesky, sneaky Decepticons.

That, according to Wikipedia, is the plot of the June 27 blockbuster.

We shall see, won’t we.

Argh! Lindsay Makes Oprah Cuss!

For real, Lindsay?

Like, you are not seriously challenging fackin Oprah!

That was my gut reaction when I saw the first official trailer for Lindsay, Lindsay Lohan’s OWN docu-series, which is premiering this weekend.

Yeah, the clip shows L2 sounding candidly aware of her situation (I have to wonder if she ever calls out her addictions for what they are) – but it also shows her wallowing in her own self-made drama, with a dash of Dina Lohan BS and the tease of a confrontation with Michael Lohan thrown in for good measure.

But the real shocker kicker is La Lohan makes her Oprah cuss – cut the bulls---,” girl, “I really do want you to win! – because she doesn’t seem to have adhered to the O way during production, and more importantly, because she – gasp! – seems to not have taken her recovery as seriously as she should have for a while there (her sober coach is featured in the trailer…and his silence when he is asked if Linds is sober is beyond-telling).

The drama!

Watch it all unfold beginning on March 9.

Photo: Instagram.com/lindsaylohan.

Update 1: Well, it cant be all that bad. L2 has just booked a guesting gig on TV’s 2 Broke Girls.

Look for her on the show on April 14.

Update 2: Who say this one coming?

Lindsay Lohan thinks Lindsay jacks up the drama in the name of ratings.

Of course she does.

Conan Takes Over MTV

What do you do after hosting the Emmys twice to great acclaim? My, if youre Conan O’Brien you host the Oscars MTV Movie Awards, of course.

I know – didn’t we just wrap up one awards season…must we move on the next already? (There’s no rest for the Holly-wicked.)

Anyway, it seems the powers that be at MTV have been pursuing the funny guy fiercely for the gig for a while, and, at long last, O’Brien has agreed to host the infomercial show this year, much to my delight.

“After eight years of intense negotiations,” he quipped on his eponymous TBS show last show, “I am hosting MTV’s second most prestigious awards show.

Right on!

Update: And the nominees are….

12 Years a Slave? American Hustle? The Wolf of Wall Street? What is this, the Oscars all over again?

Well, no. Not with Best Kiss, Best Fight, and Best Shirtless Performance in the mix. Duh.

High Up Lo-Fang!

Have you heard of Lo-Fang yet?

No, he is not the latest cellist sensation to come out of the East (although he does play the instrument) – he is the L.A. singer, producer, multi-instrumentalist total cutie o.k.a. Matthew Hemerlein.

And he is something to look up and play on high, kids.

Do give his debut album Blue Film – which is out now – a spin (or, at least, listen to his Look Away”), and catch him on the road if you can: He is out on tour with Lorde right now.

When Wisin Met J. Lo…and Ricky Martin

Sometimes when you’re famous, you pay it forward.

You do something for the planet…and you do something for your buddies.

That’s exactly what’s happened for Wisin (from Wisin & Yandel fame), whose super-danceable new single, Adrenalina, features not just one big gun but two: Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.

H-O-T.

Mira come sube!

The Original Spy

Jack O’Connell.

No, serious. Jack O’Connell.

Y’all are really gonna be talking about this particular up-and-comer later this year when Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken arrives in theaters at Christmastime, but that don’t mean I have to.

Wait to talk about him, that is.

The in-demand actor set to venture into Section 6, a forthcoming thriller about the origins of the British intelligence agency MI6, which was founded during World War I.

Up next, though, O’Connell will be seen in this weekend’s 300: Rise of an Empire.

Veronica Mars’…New Old Song

Eleven more days!

That’s just how long we gotta wait to finally see the Veronica Mars movie.

You should see just how big I’m smiling right now.

So how about we get pumped for this major movie event by listening to a new version of the Dandy Warhols We Used to Be Friends,” as reworked by some dude named Alejandro Escovedo.

Mmm…oody!

Now click here to read about the Kristen Bell-led, Kickstarter-funded blockbuster.

Btw, the movie’s soundtrack is dropping mañana.

Ghost Storytellers

Oh. Thank. Gwyneth.

Hot on the heels of their dropping a new surprise single (Midnight”) last week, Coldplay dispensed with any and all Beyoncé-style mystery today when they announced that they are, indeed, releasing a new album titled Ghost Stories (how are you liking the artwork pictured here?) in just a couple of months.

Plus, the band dropped another single us, a romance that goes by the name of Magic.

Which. I am. Hearting.

Ghost Stories will be available on May 19 wherever and however you get your music these days.

What…an Oscars It Was

So…12 Years a Slave was named Best Picture at last night’s Academy Awards.

You know…the one with the most epic selfie ever.

The one with the pizza. And the John Travolta flub heard ’round the world – sorry, Venezuela…sorry, Ukraine (but back to you!).

And the one that inspired Sienna Miller to hit the annual Vanity Fair looking like this in Alexander McQueen (look right now – again).

I mean…that is quite a winning look, people.

The Best of the Independents and the Best of the Worst

Ready for the Oscars, people?

Just in case you aren’t, here are the winners from last night’s Independent Spirit Awards, which read to me like more of a precursor to tonight than evah, and from the Razzies (at which Movie 43 dominated), which like, did not.

Have fun, y’all!

Enigma Widow

You may or may not have known this, but Judy Davis was meant to be featured on the upcoming television event known as 24: Live Another Day!

I think the actress even worked a day on the series, but then she had to bow out for personal reasons. Something like that.

Well, her loss is the gain of Michelle Fairley, the Game of Thrones star who most recently appeared on the USA Network’s SuitsShe will be playing the British widow of a notorious terrorist (no word on whether she’ll be good or bad).

Btw, while 24 has recruited a number of old faces for its revival (like Kim Raver and, of course, MVP Mary Lynn Rajskub), it doesn’t sound like Elisha Cuthbert will be joining in on the action.

Which makes sense. Given that the action will be set in London, and maybe, you know, her character, Kim Bauer, does not live across the pond?

Hope she at least gets mentioned so we can get an update on her, no?

Finding a New J.M. Barrie

I have been hearing about how Finding Neverland was/is becoming a Harvey Weinstein-produced Broadway show for years (a little bird once told me that, at one point, even Julia Roberts read for it).

And now, it is finally happening.

With Tony nominee Matthew Morrison playing Johnny Depp’s Oscar-nominated part of J.M. Barrie.

But, wait – the show is not hitting Broadway right away.

M2 will lead a workshop of the musical, I presume in New York, that would then move to Cambridge, Mass., for a bit, then have a run in London, before coming back stateside for a Great White Way debut during the 2015-16 season.

Finding Neverland would mark a return to Broadway for Morrison, who has been living la vida Glee since 2009.

Here’s Johnny!

In case you werent appropriately excited about the upcoming Sin City sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, here’s a first look at Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny, a new character that will be introduced in the late-summer follow-up.

Frank Miller – who shared directing duties on the long-in-the-works project once again with Robert Rodriguez – needed/wanted a new character that would play a significant part in the stylish noir’s intersecting stories.

So…he dreamt one up for Gordon-Levitt to play. Well, for Johnny Depp to play, but he was not interested, and thats neither here nor there.

Anyway, Johnny“beat[ing] the wrong guy at pokerreportedly sets the sequel into motion, and as you can appreciated, Gordon-Levitt seems to have brought it.

Yay (love that dude).

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens on Aug. 22.
