Celebrated author and poet Maya Angelou reportedly has passed away at age 86 in North Carolina.
Dr. Angelou – as she is said to have preferred to be called by those not close to her (well-earned, too, given her more than 30 honorary doctorates) – kicked off her literary career in 1969 with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the first of her seven autobiographies, and was an active and strong voice in the civil rights movement.
Not to mention a very busy bee in other arenas throughout her long and full life.
Angelou was a waitress, an actress, a dancer, a singer, a film producer and director, a playwright, a TV producer, and a professor as well.
