A Gay In the NFL

Change has come to the NFL, kids.

Indeed, this past Saturday marked a watershed moment for both the football league and, obviously, Michael Sam, when the Missouri All-American defensive lineman became the 249th pick on the final day of the NFL draft and the first openly gay player in the league.

Sam will play for the St. Louis Rams, whom he thanked via tweet after the news was announced.

Looks like he got his wish to make it into the big time – something he probably felt unsure about not that long ago.

If you recall, Sam said back in February (when he came out), that he is, “a proud gay man. It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. It’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be....

I want to be a football player in the NFL.

And now he is, not to mention happy living his life and dating and getting to do what he loves. And football in America will be all the better for it.

Update: Now, evidently, OWN was fixing to put on a docu-series à la Lindsay about Michael Sam – but not anymore.

Officially, the Untitled Michael Sam Project has been postponed so Sam can focus on playing football without distraction.
