Darker Times, Darker Roles?

Someone is in the mood for a little re-invention....

Naughty girl of late Reese Witherspoon is looking to work on Inherent Vice with Paul Thomas Anderson – who is not a bad-boy director but certainly a rule breaker who works by the beat of his own drum.

With two actors about whom you can say the same thing: Joaquin Phoenix (Witherspoon’s Walk the Line co-star) and Benicio Del Toro.

And Owen Wilson.

The film is based on Thomas Pynchon’s book, the story of which is set in the 1970s and chronicles a junkie detective’s investigation into the mysterious disappearance of an ex-girlfriend.

Now, I am not saying that Witherspoon is feeling like a bad girl, but the perception about her has changed a little – c’mon...it totally has – and maybe, just maybe she’s putting that shift to good use by exploring darker parts for herself. She is an Academy Award-winning actress, after all, and she has been in a bit of a rut lately.

Perhaps circling back to Freeway territory is just what she needs.
