More Sex Coming Right Up! (Maybe)

Sarah Jessica has thought so and gone on the record about it, and, now, so has writer-director Michael Patrick King.

There is one more story left to tell in the Sex and the City saga!

MPK spoke about the possibility of elevating the movies to trilogy status when he discussed his other, cancelled-too-soon HBO cult hit, The Comeback, with Entertainment Weekly recently.

“Sarah Jessica and I both know what the final chapter is,” King told the magazine. “That doesn’t meant it will or should be told, but I do think there’s one story left.

“Whether it ever happens is a whole other situation. But there’s four girls, and those girls are still on my mind. There are other stories to tell and characters that haven’t even been written yet.”

King acknowledges that there may be some ambivalence to revisit Carrie & Co. So much time has passed, and the second movie was not all that good swell a time. But he is excited, as is SJP. Ditto, perhaps, the other three ladies that need to be factored into this stylish equation (you know who they are; they are pictured here with MPK and SJP).

So I say rip the Band-Aid, strap on your Manolos, and show us that y’all still have It, already!

Nostalgia, Pt. 42

Alrighty then: It really is like you blink and, poof, you’re 15.

Whaddya gonna do.

Not much except be totally gracious about it...and maybe sneak a flirtini – or a classic cosmo! – and celebrate how far you’ve come, for, indeed, it was 15 years ago today that HBO gave us Sex and the City and introduced us to four of our favorite modern-day heroines of TV: Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda, making bona fide stars out of Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon.

Not to mention Manolo Blahnik.

I mention the shoemaker not because I think the essence of the show can be summed up in its award-winning fascination with expensive high heels but because I believe that it earned its need for sky-high footwear by reaching the goals it set out for itself.

That stylish New York City-loving, pun-making machine was a trend-setting ground breaker that combined comedy and drama to great effect. I am not going to give you examples of moments that  I think helped changed anything that we can see because I think that, yeah, Sex and the City, on the surface, is about those instances but, more importantly, that show was and is about how those moments change(d) ya. Nudge(d) ya. Personally.

But I will say that I really loved and love that show and those girls, and so today, I salute them and their indelible footprint.

What SJP Wants SJP Gets?

For a while now, Sarah Jessica Parker has been telling people that she thinks...that she feels that there’s still one Sex and the City story left to tell.

And whaddya know, just last week, SJP sounded like a broken record when she expressed her desire go at it again.

“I’ve been saying [that],” the actress told TV’s Extra while promoting City Ballet, this new digital series she’s involved with. “If it is, in fact, the right time and the right place, maybe we should tell it.”

Do it, lady! Get your co-stars on board and do it, do it, do it! I sure could use the palate cleanser after Sex and the City 2.

Plus, Carrie & Co. are one heckuva fun time.

Thirds of Sex Coming Up

Well, it seems like Sarah Jessica Parker will see to it that we get a third Sex and the City movie, no matter what Kim Cattrall had to say about it not that long ago. Ditto Kristin Davis.

“There is [a story left to tell],” Parker told this weekend’s Parade as she began her media blitz for I Don’t Know How She Does It. “I know what the story is. It’s a small story, but I think it should be told. The question is, what’s the right time to tell it?”

Well, provided the movies’ writer-director Michael Patrick King learns to edit himself, I’d say sooner rather than later.

She Said, She Said

There are two schools of thought when it comes to a Sex and the City threequel, and as it sorta happened with the first movie (GTS, kids...as in Google that s---), it seems, just a little, that the two players with different opinions on whether the project should happen are...Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall.

Not that I am suggesting there’s any bad blood between the two.

SJP, for one, thinks, as she has said before, that “there is, perhaps, one more small, important story to tell. Whether or not we choose to do that and when we choose to do that remains, obviously, the unknown, but it’s nice to ponder.”

Fair enough.

Cattrall, for her part, doesn’t see herself channeling Samantha Jones again any time soon, if at all.

“I really don’t think so,” she said while talking up her little-seen indie Meet Monica Velour. “I don’t know. I think that everybody who could make this happen in the sense of the script and directing has gone on to other things, and I really wish them all the best. I had a fantastic time. To play [Samantha] and be a part of this series that is so beloved is such a gift and I so appreciate it.”

Fair enough, too.

Although I will say a third serving of Sex would take the edge off the second one....

Running Wild and Looking Pretty...Then

You haven’t read the last of young Carrie Bradshaw.

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell has penned a follow-up to her successful Carrie Diaries, the young-adult title that explored our favorite fashionista’s earlier years.

Summer and the City is set to be released on April 26 and will follow Carrie as she spends her first summer in Manhattan and tell the story of how she met Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda.

Bushnell, who has called the experience of writing these young-adult tomes “exciting and rewarding,” is planning on writing at least two more entries for the Bradshaw cannon.

If You Do It Once and Then Twice, You Gotta Do It Thrice

Sarah Jessica Parker is keen on more Sex.

Carrie Bradshaw’s alter ego is not ruling out a third Sex and the City movie at all – in fact, the actress is saying it more than likely will definitely happen. In time. You hear, Kristin Davis?

“I think there’s one more story to tell. I know there is,” she recently said. “I’d definitely tell that [third] story, and I know Michael [Patrick King, the movies’ writer-director] would do it right. But maybe not now.

“Maybe in five years, you know?”

As long as they edit themselves I say strap on the Choos and go for it.

The powers that be at the franchise’s studio seem supportive.

“Personally, I’d love to see it,” an executive said last year. “We’re sitting back and watching what happens.”

Life Without Sex?

Kristin Davis isn’t so sure there will be a third Sex and the City movie – and that, right now, I think could be a good thing since the first movie rocked...but this summer’s sequel didn’t at all.

“I don’t think [there will be a Sex and the City 3], not that I know of,” she said. “I wish it was so that we were continuing, but I don’t know.”

The actress hasn’t heard anything official, and is quick to point out poor box office performance or backlash aren’t impediments for the audience to get a Sex-y trilogy.

“We made $300 million internationally,” she said about Sex and the City 2, adding that the poorly received sequel might have been a product of too much buzz. “There was so much hype, not coming from us, but the media hyped it up and then they tore it down.”

I still say with good reason, but I would never discount the popularity of Carrie & Co., or the idea of seeing the ladies redeemed on the silver screen with a good (shorter) story.

Still, Davis maintains, “I could be wrong. Obviously, there was a time when we thought there was no movie happening so you never know. But it is not looking great.”

I say we give it time.... And then we let them bring the sex and the city back to Sex and the City.

The Biggest Sex of All…Again

I am a fan of Sex and the City. I was a fan of SATC during its six years on HBO, and, quite possibly, one of the few who hearted the first movie. But now, I am a disappointed fan.

As Sex and the City 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2008 smash hit, opens in theaters around the world, I cannot help but wonder (holy Manolo Blahnik!): Was it needed?

Not that I don’t welcome the sequel. I enjoy the company of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda. Those four ladies are my girls, as they are yours, and that of countless women, gay men, and closeted straight men.

The problem with SATC 2 is it’s more of the same, and not in a good way.

Sarah Jessica Parker promised us during production that this would be a romp, which, in some ways, it is thanks to a plotline that takes Carrie & Co. on a beyond-lavish trip to Abu Dhabi. However, and for lack of a better way to put it, the shtick is getting old – the fantasy is losing its gloss and shine, and not even the sight of crystal-encrusted Christian Louboutins could restore it. The girls still have It, but where the story is going is, sadly, anything but.

Just as troubling, writer-director Michael Patrick King surpasses the first movie’s 2 1/2-hours running time for some crazy reason. I recognized SATC 1’s ambition, and while SATC 2 has it, too (I mean, that’s some social commentary right there to have four liberated gals doing their thing in a place where girl power is frowned upon), it also has one heckuva lot of a sloppy streak...and a lot of time to show it off.

The puns feel forced, the script mirrors its predecessor’s in key instances, and worst, by giving us yet another happily ever after it negates the hard-fought, satisfying one we got a couple of years ago.

Sex and the City 2 opens with a truly over-the-top wedding, one to rival the one Carrie (Parker) and John James Preston, a.k.a. Mr. Big (Chris Noth) almost had. It’s a gay wedding – but not just a gay wedding but that of last gays standing Stanford (Willie Garson, in “like-a-virgin” white) and Anthony (Mario Cantone). This gwedding has swans, Carrie in a tux and fashionable hat as the best man, a token straight stud for Samantha (Kim Cattrall) to bed, lots of bubbly, and Liza. Of course La Minnelli would be there to marry the happy couple and perform Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” (Put a Ring on It)” – the homosexual pull is strong.

Updates on the women’s stylish lives are peppered in the scene, which includes their husbands, children, and pets – it’s nice to see them all in one place – and they continue the morning after over breakfast and in subsequent scenes that could’ve used a more decisive hand in the editing room.

Carrie is about to publish another book, about her first year of marriage to Big, and contemplates what happens after you say “I do” and you fall into a routine that lacks “sparkle.”

Samantha is fighting off menopause tooth and nail, taking lots and lots of pills that should help her slow down the passing of time (cue in the “swallow” joke from the trailer), while Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is struggling to be the mommy she wants to be and to trust that her hot nanny won’t be a tempt her husband away.

For her part, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is as overworked as usual, but finally in a place in her life where she wants to put her family first.

It’s good to see where our four fab friends are in life, that their economic woes, while markedly different than are ours, are woes nonetheless (Carrie can’t sell her old place...boo-friggin’-hoo). When it’s finally time to head to the Middle East, SATC 2 perks up, but so much happens over the first couple of days it’s hard to process the feelings we’re supposed to be processing.

Not helping matters is Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), looking better than ever, who Carrie sees while shopping at a souk. I won’t spoil anything at all by saying he serves as a reminder for our heroine of things past, present, and future.

I can see how bringing back Aidan was a means to an end, but I feel like King used the man and his memory for an uncool goal.

I’m on Team Aidan – don’t ever do that to him again!

As you probably know from the previews, “something happen[s]” in Abu Dhabi. Will Carrie and Big survive it?

And how does randy-panties Samantha fare on vacation in a conservative land? Will Charlotte (underused throughout and again forced to bare the brunt of a joke after falling off a camel) regain her motherly mojo? And will Miranda ever cease to be such an unfailing friend?

Never. This ladies are soul mates, and four better or for worse they are ours, too. I just wish Sex and the City 2 hadn’t made me not wanna hang with ’em for a bit.

I keed – kinda.

You gotta admit the duet, featured in Sex and the City 2 and its soundtrack, sounds an awful lot like the Cyndi Lauper hit.

More Sex, More Books

With the release of Sex and the City 2, what, less than 20 days away, anticipation is rising.

People – and by that I mean me! – can’t wait to see the ladies, the new men, Aidan, the city, and, of course, the clothes that Carrie & Co. will be rockin’.

Divas Both Old and New Like Their Sex

Alicia, Jennifer, Leona, and Liza – as in Keys, Hudson, Lewis, and with a Z – are ready for some hot action…that is, of course, some Sex and the City 2 soundtrack action.

Keys will help open the sequel with a cover Blondie’s 1980 hit “Rapture,” which will be mashed up, ever-on-trend, with the original SATC theme song.

Hudson – who is not reprising her role as Carrie’s assistant in the movie opening on May 28 – will duet (beautifully, I’m sure) with Lewis on the original ballad, “Love Is Your Color.”

For her part, Liza, as expected, will perform her very-Liza version on Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” which is featured during the movie’s gwedding, as well as Cole Porter’s “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye.”

Not to be outdone, the real ladies of Sex and the City – Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon – will be included on the album, out on May 25, btw, with their rendition of “I Am Woman.”

The Other Man Indeed

John Corbett has confirmed my most hopeful wish-turned-ew thought (for a reason): He will be on Sex and the City 2...and, potentially, not quite in the way I would’ve hoped.

“I just found out I’m going to be in the trailer, so I get to break the news,” he told Ellen DeGeneres at a taping of an episode of the comedian’s show set to air on March 31. “Aidan gets to come back.”

Although he didn’t share any other deets, it is believed that Aidan will come back and stir up some old feelings and some trouble for Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mr. Big (Chris Noth).

I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

The Other Man?

Seriously...this post contains a big ol’ wet blanket of a plot point for an upcoming movie I wish I hadn’t read.

Sarah Jessica Parker & Co. have been able to keep the plot of Sex and the City 2 pretty under wraps – until now.

According to this report, John Corbett, a.k.a. Aidan Shaw, will appear in the sequel due out on May 28, after all – and he will be stirring up some old feelings and some trouble for Carrie and Mr. Big (Chris Noth).

Word is, our fab gal and her hubby will be having a bit of a rough time connecting, and so when she runs into Aidan on a trip, the two formers...do som’in’ they shouldn’t.

Now, I’ve always been on Team Aidan, but I never wanted the powers that be to bring him back to become Carrie’s l--ah! That cheapens everything I’ve come to love about the guy.

On the other hand...we get to see Aidan again. That is, if the rumor’s true. Such a toss-up....

How the Mills Turns

Sex and the City 2 spoilers are beginning to make their way out there...minor ones, at least.

Remember Noah Mills?

Well, the model-turned-actor (who looks oh-so-disturbingly-much like a former) has blabbed a little, saying he’s playing Anthony’s (Mario Cantone) polar-opposite-ish brother.

“He’s a real New Yorker, a construction worker, blue-collar guy,” he said. “My first film experience is this role, so that was a little intimidating; they’ve worked together for so long.”

Boyfriend also says he has two scenes in the sequel opening in May, one with dialogue, and “a potentially more awkward scene.”

I’m guessing it involves Samantha, since the trailer kinda gave that away.

Way to Crush Me, John

The man we Sex and the City fans know and love as Aidan Shaw, John Corbett, is shooting down rumors that he’ll appear in the movie’s sequel this summer.

Rumor had it Aidan would run into Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) while the girls got away in Morocco.

“I wasn’t [there while they shot the movie],” the actor said over the weekend. “I was in Istanbul about six years ago, and somebody put a picture up and said I was Morocco.”

Well consider my heart broken, Corbett.

Model Noah Mills is turning actor.

The pretty boy, who works it for D&G and Michael Kors, is shooting an indie called Happy New Year, and reportedly will play Samantha’s love interest in Sex and the City 2 (I’m pretty sure that’s him at the 0:53 mark in the sequel’s trailer).

Can’t wait to see more, more, more.

I heart it because, as Carrie says, “Sometimes, you just have to get away with the girls,” who are headed to Morocco, where, perhaps, our gal will find herself a most-welcome-by-me surprise?
