They’ve Got the Spirit

Nominations for the Spirit Awards were announced yesterday, and Precious, which I still have to go see, is among the leading contenders.

The indie darling for Best Feature, alongside (500) Days of Summer, Amreeka, Sin Nombre, and The Last Station.

Gwyneth Paltrow is up for Best Female Work for her turn in last winter’s little-seen Two Lovers, which is out on DVD now (I recommend it thoroughly, btw). Her competition includes Maria Bello (Downloading Nancy), Amreeka’s
Nisreen Faour, Helen Mirren (The Last Station), and Precious’ Gabourey Sidibe.

A Single Man’s Colin Firth is up for Best Male Lead, as is
Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), (500) Days of Summer’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Souleymane Sy Savane (Goodbye Solo) and The Vicious Kind’s Adam Scott.

Tom Ford also got nominations for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay for A Single Man, his feature film debut.
