Watching Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to Borat, the very funny Brüno I was always amazed and amused, often laughing out loud, but rarely shocked.
And I’m sure Cohen wouldn’t have it any other way.
Look, it’s Saturday, and I don’t feel like writing about a movie that you really need to see to get.
Just know that Brüno, a gay fashionista, is the host of the top-rated late-night fashion TV show in any German-speaking country…but not, you know, Germany.
His mission? To become the biggest Austrian celebrity since Hitler.
His strategy? To crisscross the globe in the hopes of finding fame and love.
Brüno is a constant chuckle. It’s not quite fair to compare, but everybody will, so I won’t say it’s better or worse than Borat. What worked in Borat’s advantage was a sense of discovery that the audience has lost, which is probably why Brüno is more graphic (people seem to lose control in front of a dancing penis).
This summer season needed a little hilarious button-pushing, which Cohen provides in fashionable spades with this movie. Hello!
My Rating ***1/2
