Pretty Deadly Mars

They put this one together real fast, huh.

Guess they knew they should strike while the Deadpool-was-a-hit iron was hot.

All glibness aside, I’m talking about Life, a space-set thriller about finding, well...life on Mars, and how said life just might try to take yours. Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and The Girl on the Train’s Rebecca Ferguson star.

Safe House’s Daniel Espinosa directed the movie, which is set for release next Memorial Day weekend.

Check its trailer now.

Now a Family of Four

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are having a very good end of the month.

The two have welcomed their second child together into the world, a baby that, I will bet, is either a boy or a girl.

The kid – about whom we have only a place of birth: New York – joins big sister James, 22 months, at the Lively-Reynolds household.
Congrats, y’all.

Doubling Down

More pretty coming up.

Baby No. 2 is on the way for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds!

Good thing Deadpool was a hit and The Shallows looks like it’s gonna do well for the actress. In fact, the news broke because she was recently spotted doing some reshoots for the movie in Malibu.

The couple is already (beautiful) parents to a daughter, James, who is about 16 months old (I don’t think either star has bothered to confirm an exact date yet).

The Rosie Project Resetting

Just because he is having a really good time with the superhero genre these days, do not think of Ryan Reynolds as of the dramedy game.

R2 is eyeing The Rosie Project, a movie once meant to be helmed by Richard Linklater with Jennifer Lawrence in of the starring roles.

The movie was/is to tell the story of a woman in possession of all the opposite qualities a socially inept genetics professor thinks a perfect mate should have, which, of course, leads to the universe having them meet so all sorts of sparks may fly.

Well there ya go. All it took was one Deadpool.

He Will Always Protect

Not sure this is the best way to follow up Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, but, then again, ya didn’t ask me.

The actor – oh-so-golden at the moment – has decided to board Hitman’s Bodyguard, a movie about a world renown bodyguard hired to protect a hit man coming in from the cold (Samuel L. Jackson).

Samuel L. friggin’ Jackson.

Samuel L. Jackson, who doesn’t quite stand in as sidekick to anyone, youknowhwatImean.

Samuel L. Jackson, whom Ryan Reynolds shouldn’t support because any time R2s paired with an elder statesman of Hollywood, it just doesn’t click. I mean, who can tell me that Self/less opposite Ben Kingsley or R.I.P.D. with Jeff Bridges worked?

To boot, Reynolds and Jackson are going to play characters who hate each other (because they’ve always been at odds), but who now...now are going to have to work together to stay alive and unravel the plans of a murderous Eastern European dictator to be portrayed by Gary Oldman.

Salma Hayek and Elodie Yung (Netflix’s Daredevil) are set to co-star. So there’s that, too.

Going Mars

Nothing like a hit (Deadpool!) to make the Hollywood powers that be look at ya with favor again, huh, Ryan Reynolds.

R2, dahling  it’s like you got new Life.

Which he kinda does now that he has been offered the male lead in a Daniel (Safe House) Espinosa-directed mission-to-Mars movie by that title, about, well...a mission to Mars that encounters intelligent life over there.

Rebecca Ferguson is already on board, so, you know, bf better strike while the strikin is good, no?

Smart Mouth Much?

Alright, Ryan Reynolds. Five years later, all is forgiven for Green Lantern.

That, of course, is the obvious thing to say after watching DeadpoolR2’s long-awaited superhero do-over helmed by Oscar-nominated short film-director-turned-feature-film-director Tim Miller. The movie’s already a word-of-mouth success thanks to its charismatic headliner’s social media efforts and a rare milestone that necessitated that People magazine’s Sexiest Dad Alive – now a thing, evidently – relinquish his DOA starring role in one of the first offerings of a once-not-yet-coalesced DC Comicsverse and keep the faith that everything was going to turn out A-OK.

Which it did.

Reynolds never had to revisit Hal Jordan again. He got to keep Blake Lively and spawn a baby girl with the actress. And he got to have a shot at winning America’s heart and good will back this weekend, which he will.

Bonus: He gets to be a cheeky, fourth-wall-breaking sunovagun while doing so, ohyeshedoes.

Deadpool, you see, is a blockbuster like no other.

It is the Guardians of the Galaxy of the Xverse in that it is offbeat (by this kind of production’s standards and because, well...you’ll see) and super-surprising and, again, a sure-to-be instant hit that ought to leave both critics and audiences alike satisfied – trust. And get this: It is a movie about how the worst thing that can happen to Ryan Reynolds is, no, not Green Lantern (let’s just never mention that one again) but going ugly, and the best thing that can happen to the guy is have us willingly go along with the notion, not realizing how ridikolous the idea is until it’s too late ’cause you’re in like Flynn. He’s hooked you. He’s reeled you in, and guess what. He’s already munching on ya.

An origin story that starts in the middle (and in the middle of a bullet-ridden, blood-spattering fight; I told ya this was quote-unquote offbeat), which is totally meta because Reynolds as Deadpool ain’t something new (alright – let’s just never mention X-Men Origins: Wolverine, either), the movie centers on his self-admitted anti-heroic Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces who’s rather aloofly disillusioned by his life and, yet, brazenly matter o’ fact about maintaining his forward motion.

Wade lives openly and loudly in the shadows, has a smart mouth, and works as a mercenary of sorts – ergo his Merc with a Mouth nickname, which I don’t think anyone actually gives him, not even T.J. Miller, who pops up as Weasel, his buddy from the underground. Wade threatens and roughs up people som’in’ fierce for others who can’t fend for themselves but are willing to pay for the service. He romances a cool-chick hooker-ish toughie with an equally checkered past named Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), who gives as good as she takes, and he falls prey to a number of manhood tropes that manifest only after he gets a terminal cancer diagnosis that sends him looking for alternative treatments in order to spare his love the pain of having to witness him die a slow death.

Enter Ed Skrein (the original Daario Naharis of HBO’s Game of Thrones) as Ajax, a merc in his own right who gives Wade a free treatment that costs him dearly (his health is restored with some cool extras, but his looks, man...).

The stacked Britsh-born actor plays Deadpool’s nemesis in a serviceable manner that is hard to take serious because, yeah, he’s totally underwritten and, somehow, also just a bit overwrought, but also because the movie has this tone that begs that we don’t. Deadpool is gonna be fine, and so is the franchise that will surely be built around Deadpool, for when Reynolds isn’t helping to tell stories with Hugh Jackman & Co.

The movie proves that A) Reynolds is an ace comedian (and unafraid of giving us a peek at why Blake Lively is probably so lively as his wife), and B) that this was the role he was born to play. Or the role that he knew he could knock outta the part for Hollywood, if only Hollywood had had the balls to do it right the first time.

Because this superhero cusses. He kills indiscriminately and graphically. And he is aware that he is in a movie with some licensing limitations (X-Man Colossus pops up...but he is not played by Daniel Cudmore; his somewhat-awkward presence and that of a fairly obscure female X-Teen struck me as a careful show of faith in the product by its own powers that be).

It is all good, different entertainment, and well worth the price of admission. If you dont believe me, then take Betty White’s word for it.

My Rating ***1/2

The Realized Ad Man

It’s going from the grind of Mississippi to the advertising pitch room for Ryan Reynolds.

Gotta On Demand that, note to self.

;)

Anyway. R2 is circling the Truth in Advertising, which, see, is exactly the title of a new movie from Notting Hill’s Roger Michell.

The movie – based on an acclaimed novel by a John Kenney – will have R2 portraying an executive upstart whose boss asks him to cancel his Christmas plans in order to work on a campaign. Which, of course, suddenly makes him question everything.

Deadpool Unleashed

The wait is f---in’ over: Deadpool is coming, and like he always was f---in’ meant to in the first place, to boot.

The first trailer for Ryan Reynolds cinematic do-over, Deadpool, opening next February, is finally here. Click here to watch the clean version, and GTS to catch the red-band trailer.

En-f---in’-joy!

And remember: Deadpool – which co-stars Morena Baccarin (TV’s Gotham), Gina Carano, T.J. Miller (HBO’s Silicon Valley), and Ed Skrein – will take theaters on Feb. 12.

Sweet!

Ryan Reynolds’ Been Hit!

Those damn paparazzi.

Ryan Reynolds reportedly was hit by paparazzo-operated car in Vancouver this weekend. The actor – in town shooting Deadpool – is OK (i.e., uninjured), per his publicist.

The incident is being described as a hit-and-run in a hotel parking lot.

Fingers crossed they find they perp and no one buys and runs those pics.

Deadpool Will See You Now

We’ve always known Ryan Reynolds to be a good-looking mofo good sport, even in the undenieable face of spectacular failure (cough, cough, Green Lantern, cough).

So no one could be surprised this week when R2 tweeted this first-look pic of himself in his new Deadpool costume. Of course he would pose as Burt Reynolds did back in the day (you know the famous shot...).

Can’t wait to see him in action, yo. This might finally be his big, big moment.

Reynolds’s long-gestating-and-awaited, very-much-part-of-the-Xverse stand-alone Deadpool – featuring Morena Baccarin and Gina Carano – will arrive in theaters next February.

The World Is Now More Beautiful

Evidently, congratulations are in order for Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.

The couple reportedly welcomed their first baby together last month.

Although the kid arrived early, she or he is now said to be healthy and doing well.

Deadpool Again

Who would have guessed it.

Looks like Ryan Reynolds will get to play Deadpool again, after all.

Conventional wisdom had it R2 would not necessarily be invited to reprise the role that he originated in the bombtastic X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009, right. That movie was not beloved by critics or fans, and Reynolds’ star has all but failed to rise to the level it was expected to once upon a time five-six-seven years ago (Green Lantern did him no favors whatsoever, and, come to think of it, the same applies to those who went and watched it).

No matter, though – the actor is closing a deal to play the part once again in the February 2016 Deadpool movie.

Someone has an angel at his side (and I don’t mean Blake Lively).

Preserving the Pretty

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are doing humanity a favor and procreating.

Yes, the actor and his actress/Preserve businesswoman-wife announced they are expecting their first baby via her lifestyle website bright and early today, with a post all about “that special moment at the creation of family” that was accompanied with this oh-so-nice pic at right.

Sweet! Acongrats to the happy, gorgeous couple.

Deadpool Is Finally Coming

Redemption is finally on the horizon for Ryan Reynolds.

The actor – who more than likely will not be asked to reprise his role as the Green Lantern in the forthcoming Justice League movie – will be playing Deadpool once again, in a stand-alone movie about the Marvel character that is officially on the fast track for a February 2016 opening date.

R2 first took on the Merc with a Mouth in the bombtastic X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Tim Miller, the guy behind the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo title sequence, will be doing the directing honors.

You Been a Bad, Bad Boy, Ry?

Perhaps this one will work, Ry.

Poor Ryan Reynolds hasn’t had a hit in so long, some people are starting to think that, maybe, he should call Chris Brown for coffee.

R2 – who has The Captive coming up (a film that got quite a critical beating at Cannes earlier this summer) – will try his luck with a project that has a lot of ingredients that usually work: a Kevin Costner CIA thriller.

Reynolds will join the Cost, Gary Oldman (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and Tommy Lee Jones in Criminal, which – get this – will focus on an unpredictable and dangerous prisoner who gets an informational download (the memories, secrets, and skills of a dead operative...what could go wrong!) into his head.

Will he play the young’un that all the old-timers are after or the newbie lawman that helps track down the titular bad guy down? I dunno.

All I know this one might put the one Sexiest Man Alive’s career back on track.

Hunted By the Enemies of Another

Maybe this will put an end to Ryan Reynolds’ losing streak.

R2 has signed up to be Selfless, as in he’s gonna star in a new thriller directed by Tarsem that will go by that title, about an aging man who swaps bodies with a (hot-as-hell) man in his best years.

Too bad for the fella his new body belongs to a guy who has a bounty on his head.

Sounds kinda Meet Joe Black-ish, in a way, right? And, uh...Ry – that did not work quite out all that well.

Whaddya gonna do. At least the guy still has his abs and Blake Lively.

The Betting Man

Following the upcoming for-the-children Turbo and the messtastic-looking R.I.P.D. with a dose of indie-tinted reality, Ryan Reynolds?

Good friggin’ call.

R2 is eyeing a part in Mississippi Grind, the new project from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson).

The film will center on a gambler in debt who teams up with a(nother?) gambling addict to try and win his way out of the hole. The Place Beyond the Pines’ Ben Mendelsohn will co-star.

That’s right, ya sexy dude: remind us you can act, too.

Update: Wanna see Ryan Reynolds be all kinds of adorable to one young interviewer at the premiere of Turbo?

Well then, click here.

The Old New Face of Connor MacLeod

Guess that sexy mofo Ryan Reynolds was gonna be busy with a remake of the cult classic Highlander....

But not anymore.

Evidently, R2 was attached to star in such a project until last week, but ever since director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) dropped out last fall (after staying on board for like, a year) – and no one was hired to replace him – Reynolds’ involvement became more and more iffy.

Until it became zip.

I guess the part of immortal Scottish warrior Connor MacLeod is up for grabs, men of Hollywood with a certain je ne sais quoi.

Get it, boys.
