Old Modern Woman

Blair Waldorf’s portrayer is headed back to TV.

Indeed, new-mom Leighton Meester (The CW’s Gossip Girl) is set to lead Making History opposite Adam Pally (TV’s Happy Endings), a new Outlander-esque time-travel single-cam comedy from the guys that gave us The Last Man on Earth (Making History is also going to air on Fox).

The show will follow three unlikely friends, who find an even less likely way to travel through time, which totally complicates their personal lives in the present day.

Meester will play a colonial self-educated woman, who becomes fascinated by commonly accepted modern ideas of equality that are actually practiced – ideas that she shares in her 1775 and that no one wants to consider.

Sounds like she is going to find herself some ears that will listen.

Mama Meester Alert!

Well this is news that probably went happy coast to coast earlier this week.

The ultimate Upper East Side girl and her cool-O.C.-guy husband are expecting a baby.

Yes, congratulations are in order for Leighton Meester and Adam Brody now that they are set to become parents...some time later this year? This much was beyond-evident after some paparazzi caught up with the erstwhile Gossip Girl looking preggers while out and about last weekend.

You Can Pull at Leighton’s Heartstrings Now

They say good things come to those who wait.

Leighton Meester has been waiting since 2009 to finally give us a comprehensive sample of her mad music skillz.

The erstwhile Blair Waldorf of TV’s Gossip Girl has dabbled here and there and over there when it comes to singing, but that debut she teased more than five years ago never quite materialized.

Until now.

Maybe.

Meester is ready to drop an LP called Heartstrings on us, which is why she released a single by that name for the world to hear earlier this week. “It’s been a long time coming,” she said. “I’m very excited to finally release [my songs].”

No word on whether the actress-cum-singer’s “Somebody to Love” or  “Your Love’s a Drug” will be included on the record, but...Heartstrings is meant to be heard on Oct. 28.

Singing About Dreams

I’m...starting to think we are never getting that newlywed Leighton Meester record the actress said she was getting ready to put out like, five years ago.

So it’s a good thing she gets to sing on screen every once in a while.

And that she likes to jam it with her gal pals, as she did recently with singer-songwriter Dana Williams, with whom she recorded a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.”

Sweet voice. Wish we had gotten to hear what she was working on way back when the Gossip Girl iron was scorching hot.

Broadway Girl

Listen up, Upper East Siders, and all of New York, actually: Leighton Meester’s back in the city.

And she is doing Broadway.

The erstwhile Blair Waldorf is set to play Curley’s wife in the revival Of Mice and Men revival that James Franco and Chris O’Dowd are headlining next spring.

Break a leg, girl!

Previews for Of Mice and Men will start in March for an April 16 opening. The play will run through July 27.

Blair Waldorf and Seth Cohen Are Getting Married!

OMG, it’s like Chrismakkuh came early for TV fans.

Leighton Meester and Adam Brody are engaged to be married.

The two – she the former MVP of Gossip Girl, he the geek-culture-icon breakout of The O.C. – have been dating at least a year and worked together in the 2011 indie The Oranges.

Congratulations and best wishes, kids!

Timing Is Everything for Leighton Meester

Well this sucks.

Evidently, Leighton Meester was supposed to be in the Veronica Mars movie that is currently in production, but one of ’em pesky scheduling conflicts is keeping the Gossip Girl actress from reprising her role as Neptune High mean girl Carrie Bishop.

Further making this a bittersweet bit of news: Carrie is to play a major part in the movie’s plot.

“One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent, beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role,” said Rob Thomas, Veronica Mars’ creative father and the movie’s director. “Once it became evident that we couldn’t make Leighton’s schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie.”

So Thomas picked Andrea Estella, the lead singer of the indie band Twin Sister, to fill Meester’s shoes.

Bummer.

Catch a Falling Star

It’s a story as old as this business we call show: that of the great entertainer haunted by demons so strong he or she can’t help but fall down the rabbit hole and take us – ever their captive audience – down with them.

In Shana Feste’s tremendously anticipated (by me) Country Strong, that most captivating, intriguing, maddening creature we can’t help but love (and dislike a tad) is country superstar Kelly Canter. Kelly, known to all as the Grammy-winning Belle of Bristol, is best remembered as the sunniest, shiniest thing, but that was before she crashed and burned on stage during a big concert. Now, she’s dimming – a shadow of her former self struggling to cast herself in a light all her own – and as played by my girl Gwyneth Paltrow, she’s vulnerable, flawed, angel-voiced, “stronger than all of this,” yet so...not.

G.P., it must be said, has her job cut out for her, for Feste doesn’t make it easy for her or her cast mates (which include a never-more-actor-y Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund, and Leighton Meester) to inhabit a fully realized world.

Paltrow, though, rises to the challenge, and so do her supporting players, especially Hedlund, who is a complete revelation and the heart of Country Strong. His rootsy, hipster-y look and well-suited-for-the-genre vocals come together tremendously, and give his honky-tonk singer/rehab-facility orderly an air of authenticity that lends the movie a much-needed boost in key scenes.

Speaking of rehab, that is where Hedlund’s Beau Hutton meets Ms. Kelly Canter.

She’s there getting herself sorted out following that meltdown I alluded to earlier. It happened about a year ealier. Kelly was in Dallas performing...she was pregant, five months along, and also drunk. Some time during the show, she tripped and fell, losing the baby.

Her star was tarnished, perhaps forever and irreparably, but on the day we meet Kelly, her husband/manager James (McGraw) marches into her room at the recovery center, walking in on his wife and Beau (who’d been writing a song together, engaged in a flirtation) and announces she’s leaving rehab to embark on a three-date encore tour.

It’s her big comeback, y’ see, but is she ready?

Paltrow and Beau say no, but Kelly says OK, she’ll go along with it because she’s scared if she doesn’t she’ll lose no, not her career, but her husband.

Opening for her will be Chiles Stanton (Meester, channeling enough of her Blair Waldorf persona from TV’s Gossip Girl and mixing that bravado with enough up-and-comer insecurity to emerge on the winning side of an underwritten role). Chiles is a former beauty queen determined to make it big in Nashville. She’s got James on her side but not Beau, who dismisses her as easily as he pays her consequence), and, with her Eve Carrington-esque quality, she makes Kelly even more jittery than she already is, the poor thing.

The whole idea of this comeback that’s being mounted for Kelly is so misguided you’ll question real hard why James is pushing for it so.

In fact, you’ll wonder why Kelly’s so messed up (at her worst, she’s a drunken mess, dancing on dive-y bar tables and being all slutacious; at her best, she’s transcending a cynical photo op, making music on the spot for a Make-A-Wish kid), why Beau wants to protect her so much, and, more importantly, why if this is supposed to be a movie about this woman’s journey it is Hedlund who does most of the heavy lifting...and when, just when is Paltrow taking to the stage, already.

After all, that is what we want to see – the GOOPster singing her little heart out. Which she does beautifully, hanging on to her accomplished twang like a natural and oozing a stage presence that’s been talked about quite a bit this awards season.

My love of what this movie meant, for Paltrow and my undying fandom of her, has been well chronicled.

Alas, Country Strong ultimately disappoints in that it gives the Oscar winner much too little meat to bite into and chew (holy melodrama, she sure is asked to cry a lot) that by the time her big moment finally arrives – which she beyond-owns – you’ll be as emotionally drained as Kelly Canter. As Beau sings in the end, timing is everything, and this movie suffers from a lack of it and focus.

The performances elevate this one, as does the music (with which I’m obsessed), so keep that in mind when you go see this one, and you should give in to it and go see it, alright, so this weekend you better get, y’ read.

My Rating **1/2

A Little Bit of Sunshine

Country Strong is a-comin’ – and you know I can’t wait for it, alright, and that I just heart Gwyneth Paltrow in it, sight unseen.

Leighton Meester co-stars in the movie opening wide on Jan. 7, playing the young upstart giving G.P.’s character a run for her country-comeback money.

The Gossip Girl MVP also does some singin’ in the movie, tackling a couple of songs. One, titled “Words I Couldn’t Say,” about which I already gushed, is more of a slow jam, but on the other, the sunnier, flirtier “Summer Girl,” gal pal gets all girly girl on us with.

And I likey. Check it out:

Bouncy, huh?

The Twang of the Ingénue

We all know Gwyneth Paltrow’s Country Strong (which is due out on Dec. 22) is at the very top of my list, and now so is Leighton Meester.

Well, the Gossip Girl star already was, but since she’s co-starring with G.P. in the fading-country star-on-the-comeback-road-themed movie that goes double.

Meester, who’s been flirting with a pop-music career for a bit, also has a song, a downtempo ballad titled “Words I Couldn’t Say,” on the movie’s soundtrack, y’ see, for she plays the pretty young thing setting the country world on fire while Paltrow’s character figures herself out.

And just like Gwyn’s “Country Strong” I’m kinda feeling this one, too.

Yep, I’ve gone country. Movie country, but country nonetheless.

The Sweet Sound of Kelly Canter

It’s no secret I’m beyond-anticipating this winter’s
Country Strong, starring my favorite golden-haired obsession, Gwyneth Paltrow.

As y’all should know, the Oscar winner plays a washed-up country singer trying to get her career back on track opposite Tim McGraw as her husband-manager.

Now, did you know the pair
will duet on a song called “Me and Tennessee” in the awards-bait-y movie (Paltrow sings the title song, which is already getting play), and they reportedly turned to none other than her hubby, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, for songwriting tips.

“‘Me and Tennessee’ is a special song that perfectly fits the movie,” G.P. said. “It’s about a couple who are maybe irreparably damaged. But then the chorus is, ‘Then that old song comes on, together we’re singing, forever we’re singing, that old country song.’ So it’s about country music bringing people back together when they’re having a difficult time in life.”

Oh, Gwyn…if only it were that easy….

The Country Strong soundtrack, which I’m so buying since she says the genre can mend an’thin’, natch, is due out on Oct. 26. It features a song by co-star Leighton Meester, Faith Hill, Sara Evans, Patty Loveless, and Hank Williams Jr., among others.

Paltrow, btw, is expected to be seen on the small screen as soon as November on at least
two episodes of Glee, and then, I should hope, hosting SNL, perhaps?

Single White College Psycho Bitch

Leighton Meester has been testing the waters of film for a little bit now, with cameo appearances in Date Night and Going the Distance.

She also has dipped her foot into the music scene (hey there, “Somebody to Love,” and I see you, too, “Your Love’s a Drug”), yet her music career remains TBD.

Next winter, though, the Gossip Girl MVP is headlining her own movie, the thriller The Roommate, opposite Minka Kelly (TV’s Friday Night Lights).

Meester will play a deranged college freshman who becomes obsessed with her new roommate (Kelly). It’s all very Single White Female for the teen set.

The Roommate, which also features Easy A players Cam Gigandet and Alyson Michalka (TV’s Hellcats) is due out on Feb. 4.

The Return of a Country Queen

I want Gwyneth Paltrow to win another Oscar.

And y’ know what: Country Strong, her next movie, just might get her an invite to the big party next winter.

The facts are these (oh, how I miss Pushing Daisies – but I digress): In the movie G.P. plays a fading country star staging a comeback after a stint in rehab (behind the glamour is a drinking problem).

And as well all know, America, heck, the world likes a comeback story, so we should all love to root for Paltrow’s Kelly Canter, as the singer struggles to find her place back in a spotlight that now craves Chiles Stanton, a pretty young thing played by Leighton Meester (that Paltrow herself has been away from the spotlight and hasn’t headlined a project in a while is an added bonus):

Country Strong co-stars Tim McGraw as Paltrow’s husband/manager, and Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy), as the opening act who’s rooting for her on a more personal level than just a professional.

The movie, which features Paltrow singing again (super-smart to release the movie’s titular single during the Grammy qualifying months, btw), is due out, in limited release, on Dec. 22, and goes wide on Jan. 7.

From Paris with Gossip

The fourth season of The CW’s Gossip Girl is, as Rachel Zoe said of the Golden Globes, imminent.

Pictures of Blake Lively and Leighton Meester shooting on location in Paris have been everywhere, and now there’s a brand new trailer to tease what’s a-comin’ on the not-so-guilty-pleasure show.

And I XOXO it so.

Update: As Season 4 gets underway, Serena (Lively) will be getting romanced by Sam Page.

The actor, last seen up to no good on Desperate Housewives, will join the Upper East Siders in a multi-episode arc as Serena’s new love interest beginning in October.

Ripe for the Picking

Actress-singer Leighton Meester is keeping busy.

Gossip Girl’s MVP
will star opposite Hugh Laurie (TV’s House) in The Oranges, an independent dramedy to be directed by Julian Farino (HBO’s Entourage) about a middle-aged man who has an affair with his friend’s daughter.

Scandalous!

Meester is dead-set on being like, the new Jennifer Lopez, I think.

She’s in a hit TV show, she’s got a simmering music career going on – her latest, “
Your Love’s a Drug” needs to be released on iTunes and a video pronto! – and her movie career is very much happening (she’s also working on a movie with Gwyneth Paltrow, and is set to fright audiences by going all Single White Female in The Roommate).

I’d say La Meester is going at it the right way.

Simply Irresistible, Pt. 65

I am loving Leighton Meester’s new song, “Your Love’s a Drug,” which I saw her perform on South Beach last month, at the opening of Klutch Nightclub.

It’s like, c’mon girl, drop the album on us, already.

You know you want to.

Young Hollywood Fights AIDS

To mark this year’s World AIDS Day, which is today, a veritable Who’s Who of Young Hollywood has combined their voices for a new PSA campaign called “Coming Together as ONE.”

The goal is to mobilize young people in the fight against poverty, TB, malaria, and, natch, HIV/AIDS.

Look – there’s New Moon hottie Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene and Nikki Reed. And Leighton Meester. And Jessica Szohr and Ed Westwick. And FlashForward’s John Cho:

Painted in the Town

Dear Leighton Meester,

I totally heart your new single, “Somebody to Love,” featuring Robin Thicke – especially the way he says “putty cat” – but girl, you seem to have overdone your makeup for the video:

I can’t wait to see the whole thing, though….

XOXO
