A Time to Kill

Leonardo DiCaprio has beaten Tom Cruise to the playing-a-serial-killer punch.

The Inception star has lined up the story of one the most notorious murderers in U.S. history as the next entry in his résumé.

DiCaprio will play Herman Webster Mudgett, a.k.a. H. H. Holmes, a serial killer who confessed to having introduced 27 people to their maker – and may have killed as many as 200 – during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, in the big-screen adaptation of Erik Larson’s 2003 best-seller Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America.

Cruise had initially optioned the book and planned to play Holmes, but DiCaprio’s reported determination went the distance on the project.
