Titanic Dad

Sam Worthington is spacing out.

The Cake actor has signed on for the male lead in The Titan, an elevated sci-fi family adventure with a dash of love story revolving around a military family that’s relocated and deployed into a groundbreaking experiment about man’s genetic evolution in space.

Phew. Got all that?

Golden Globe winner Ruth Wilson (Showtime’s The Affair) will portray his wife.

Sam the Dad

Give it up: Sam Worthington is officially a DILF.

The Cake star and Lara Bingle, his Australian model-gf, have welcomed their first child together.

No word on whether the baby is a boy or a girl, but it probably definitely is very, very cute and destined to have a nice little accent.

Queen of Pain

And Jennifer Aniston’s first serious Oscar-contending turn is just about ready to be seen.

Cake, L’Aniston’s latest vanity-free project, will get an Academy Award-qualifying run next month. For it, America’s favorite Friend eschewed the trappings of traditional movie hair and make-up to play a pills-addicted accident victim experiencing chronic pain who becomes morbidly fascinated by the suicide of a member (Anna Kendrick) of her chronic pain support group.

Sam Worthington portrays Kendrick’s character’s widower, a man with whom Aniston’s Claire forms a sort of bond.

Check out the trailer for the film, which already has proved quite the polarizing subject matter for the good ol’ people of the online community. Som’in’ about how talk of L’Aniston potentially getting a nom is like, silly stuff.

Which I disagree with: Girlfriend can act. She has a Golden Globe and an Emmy that proves, albeit, yes, for a comedy project.

But we all know how much harder than drama comedy can be.

A Worthington Fatherhood

The Avatarverse is experiencing a baby boom, y’all.

Not only is ZoĆ« Saldana having twins, alright, but Sam Worthington is going to become a parent, too.

Yep, the amazing Aussie is expecting his first child.

Well, duh, his Australian model-gf Lara Bingle is. But you know what I mean.

Cake Lady

Like it or not, Jennifer Aniston is enjoying some strong Oscar buzz following the recent Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her film Cake.

Of course, whether that chatter is warranted – or whether it actually translates into a first nomination for America’s favorite Friend – remains to be seen, but this much is clear: This is gonna another vanity-free turn by the actress, in the vein of her work in The Good Girl or Friends with Money.

L’Aniston plays Claire in the Daniel Barnz-directed ensemble, which also includes Adriana Barraza (Babel), Anna Kendrick, and Sam Worthington, you see. Claire is a literally and figuratively scarred woman who finds herself morbidly fascinated by the suicide of a member of her chronic pain support group (Kendrick).

From the looks of it, she is also a woman who is not above packing up her attitude and going down to Mexico to score some painkillers.

Can’t wait to see more!

Cake, which is still awaiting distribution, could very well sneak into this season’s awards race, so keep your eye for it.

Make room, naked Jake Gyllenhaal – some more people are joining ya in Everest.

Worthington will play a climbing expert, while Wright will portray Brolin’s wife.

Still Not Sexy, Sam

Is Sam Worthington like, trying to be the new Sean Penn, what with his getting his bad boy on and all?

The Aussie actor was arrested – again – yesterday in New York City, on an assault charge after getting into it with a paparazzo who allegedly kicked his gf in the shin. The Avatar star was later released on a desk appearance ticket and is due back in court in a couple of days.

Lest you forget, Worthington got pinched two years ago, for disorderly conduct and fighting (the charges were later dismissed).

C’mon, guy – lock that s--- up!

Jake Sully and Neytiri Will Be Back

The much-announced three Avatar sequels are a-comin’.

And Sam Worthington and Zoƫ Saldana on board!

Officially.

Indeed, the two have signed, sealed, and delivered the participation in the upcoming sequel, threequel, and fourthquel to the Oscar-winning 2009 James Cameron-directed blockbuster, which will now start rolling out in 2016.

Stephen Lang is also set to reprise his role as badass Col. Quaritch. No word on whether Sigourney Weaver or Michelle Rodriguez will be seen in the movies in some way.

In the Kidnapping Biz Now

Finally! A little news on my beloved Sam Worthington.

I’d been a good while there since I last had anything to share on that amazing Aussie.

Evidently, he and Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten have signed on to co-star opposite Anthony Hopkins in Kidnapping Freddy Heineken. The erstwhile Hannibal Lecter will play the titular beer heir, for whom the once-largest-ever ransom was paid in 1983.

That would be approximately $50 million of today’s dollars, yo.

Imma guess Worthington and his fellow young actors will play the bad guys in this one.

The Loner Assassin with the Heart of Gold

That amazing Aussie Sam Worthington is looking to play a classic Hollywood anti-hero: the bad guy gone good.

The Avatar star will produce and star in director Phillip Noyce’s adaptation of Kevin Wignall’s 2004 novel For the Dogs.

Worthington will play a loner gun for hire who helps a bright college girl exact revenge on those who 86d her family without mercy or consequence.

No word on who could his pretty co-star could be, although, for whatever reason, I immediately thought of Hayden Panettiere (TV’s Nashville).

Not Sexy, Sam

Jeez, Sam Worthington – you sooo did not a rap sheet.

The Aussie actor was arrested in Atlanta over the weekend, for disorderly conduct and fighting. The charges, however, have been dismissed.

I’m not gonna lie, stud: I’m disappointed.

Now get back to work on Breacher or Ten or whatever it
’s called now and don’t rub off on Arnold Schwarzenegger, Josh Holloway, or Joe Manganiello.

OK, you can do it on the last two...in that way...if you let me watch.

What’s His Number?

Haven’t heard much about Sam Worthington (Terminator: Salvation, Avatar) in a bit.

Thank goodness for yesterday.

Word on the street has it the Aussie is looking to join Arnold Schwarzenegger in Ten, an indie – now there’s a word not commonly associated with the former governor – thriller about a dirty DEA task force that makes out like a bandit with a drug cartel’s money (always a bad idea).

The rub? Each naughty boy and – I’ll presume – girl is taken out one by one.

No word on which side of the game either Worthington or Schwarzenegger will be on, but it is kinda neat to think these two will be working together having both player Terminators, wouldn’t ya say.

Extreme Measure

Sam Worthington plays a man forced to take a stand in Man on a Ledge (which is not to be confused with The Ledge
, btw).

The amazing Aussie plays an escaped framed convict who attempts to clear his much-maligned name with a suicide stunt, which his little brother (Jamie Bell) sees as the perfect opportunity to misbehave.

Or so it seems.

Elizabeth Banks co-stars, so you know I’m so there.

The Burden of Heroism

Jessica Chastain, that mesmerizing It Actress of the moment, gets in a pretty bloody fight at the beginning of John Madden’s The Debt, the remake of a 2007 Israeli movie.

It’s a good, long, thrilling while before we revisit what happens next and we learn the truth, about the fight, and about what came to be of Chastain’s Rachel, Sam Worthington’s David, and Stefan (Marton Csokas), three Mossad agents on an important and secret mission in mid-1960s East Berlin.

The actress (who’s making quite good on the buzz surrounding her Hollywood ascension, thanks to turns in The Tree of Life and The Help, and will continue to do so this fall, btw, in a couple more projects opening before year’s end) is something both fierce and vulnerable in the brutal scene and throughout the movie.

This is is due, in part, to the fact that Rachel’s the lone female in an operation that requires not only precision but a presence of mind – the agents are on a covert mission to bring a Nazi war criminal, an infamous doctor named Vogel (Jesper Christensen), to justice – that we don’t usually associate with a woman’s role in ’60s-set movies.

A housewife she ain’t: She is the key to trio’s success, and, as it turns out, a a big reason for the complications that arise in middle of what should be a cinch of an extraction. Well...as much of one as it could be in heavily guarded East Berlin.

The Debt flashes forward to 1997 Tel Aviv and back. In the ’90s, we meet older Rachel, David, and Stefan. They’re played by Helen Mirren, a broken CiarĆ”n Hinds, and a wheelchair-bound Tom Wilkinson.

Venerated for three decades by their country, they have grown apart, torn asunder by the secret they swore to keep the night of the fight that changed the course of their operation and their lives, which were well on their way there thanks to the deflections and inevitable romantic entanglements encouraged by their task.

The pressure is on more than ever now that Rachel and Stefan’s daughter has written a book about their heroism, but the question that arises once we revisit the fight that left Rachel forever scarred is whether the trio is actually deserving of the praise.

To make matters worse, allegations out of the Ukraine threaten to cast an irreparable shadow not only on them but on Mossad as well.

The secret, one of them says, must be protected, but the cost may be much to high to pay anymore.

The suspense of The Debt builds steadily in the past, the most accomplished narrative. It’s a potboiler, and I recommend that you don’t see this movie in between manis because you run the risk of biting your nails, and then you’ll be stuck with fugly fingers for a week or so. The intensity, though, get a little diluted with the time jumps, but the payoff in the end, as implausible as it seems, is well worth the liberties the script takes. That, I believe, has lots to do with the great cast Madden has on deck – it’s a good one.

My Rating ***

A Worthington Meditation on Fame

Sam Worthington has been a stranger lately.

The Avatar star may have consciously decided to stay out of the spotlight for a bit following the success of the James Cameron blockbuster, I mean...his leading lady, Zoƫ Saldana, recently said she pretty much came thisclose to having an emotional breakdown after the whirlwind of the whole thing.

And it’s not like the Aussie’s recently offerings got the wide-release treatment. Last Night is meant to be On Demand (although I cannot find it!), and The Debt was delayed from last December to this month.

In any case, Worthington’s back and talking to Men’s Health on the ups and downs of acting as a job, as well as all the good and bad he has encountered as his star rose in Hollywood.

It’s a fine read, if a bit recycled from old stuff I’ve read about him (I guess he doesn’t care to really reveal too much about himself, huh), but, hey, it’s a good thing to see him again.

Don’t go for too long again, mate.

Dan Who?

I’d never heard about Dan Dare until today, and you best believe that now that Sam Worthington is
attached to a movie about D2 I’m hitting the Google.

Hard.

OK, so he’s not a guy per se, but a comic-book character…. The blockbusting actor is in talks to star in a big-budget movie version of the English sci-fi character.

Dare was hugely popular in Britain in the 1950s, appearing each week in the Eagle comic. Together with his sidekick Digby, Dare would fight the evil Mekon week after week in its pages.

Evidently, Dare is quite the cult fave, so it’ll be interesting to learn more about ’im now that Worthington will bring him to handsome life.

When the Past Isn’t in the Past

This December, Helen Mirren is looking back.

In
The Debt (due out on Dec. 29), the Oscar winner plays a former Mossad agent who must revisit a decades-old mission that led – or did it? – to the death of a notorious Nazi war criminal.

The intensely watchable Sam Worthington co-stars as a fellow agent in a series of flashbacks.

Check out the movie’s intense trailer here.

Sam’s the Man

Blockbuster magnet Sam Worthington can’t be stopped…shan’t be stopped.

The hot Aussie will next embody H. Rider Haggard’s literary hero, the Victorian adventurer Allan Quartermain in Quartermain, a sci-fi movie he’s also producing.

Quartermain is best known as the hero of the novel King Solomon’s Mines, and
Worthington’s take will venture into outer space.

What…a Boring Battle

Once upon a time, there were gods, nd there were men.

There also was a heckuva lot of bickering among them, drama that was screened to high camp effect in the 1981’s Harry Hamlin-starring Clash of the Titans, a pretty cult-y swords-and-sandals epic (of sorts) about a group of insolent mortals and the Olympian gods they so offended.

When the news came out that the movie was getting remade, I wasn’t excited – that is, until I heard that the new
Clash of the Titans would star Sam Worthington, the new face of the Hollywood blockbuster (Terminator Salvation, Avatar).

The movie, as you may well know, is about the Aussie actor’s Perseus, the Greek demigod who stood up to the gods, the one who said “Enough!” It’s a revenge story, really – born of Zeus (Liam Neeson) but raised as a man, Perseus is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), the vengefully plotting god of the underworld.

Unbeknownst to our hero, a fisherman who longs to know more about his origin, that is the loss that will thrust him onto the path toward fulfilling his destiny, a path that runs through the middle of an ongoing conflict between man and gods. He has nothing left to lose, after all, so he embarks on a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus and unleash hell on earth.

Too bad this path is a long, unexciting one. I mean, poor Perseus: he has to do battle with a bunch of giant scorpion-type beasts – I’m sure they’re called som’in’, but I’m rusty on my Greek mythology – and face off (or rather not) against the slithering, turn-men-to-stone-ing Medusa, and hurry back to town to kill the feared-by-all Kraken…and all I could think of was unamused I felt.

It pains me to say so but Worthington didn’t helping matters. Sure, he looks beyond-H-O-T in a leather skirt, but his Perseus is a little too morose. Yeah, the guy’s oh-so-handsome to look at and in the end that’s fine, fine, fine, but I wanted to connect with him and really root for him. He’s struggling to accept his specialness – I was doing the same over my dwindling South Patch watermelon candy – and yet, he trades his Everyman ’tude for a shiny forged-in-the-skies sword and a fast Pegasus without much reservation.

Instead I found myself hoping they’d put more monsters in front of him to slay. Or for him to get eaten by. I don’t just feel but know that Worthington owes me…and I can think of a couple of ways he can pay me back for my time. If you know what I mean.

More annoying, though, was the fact that this Clash of the Titans was delayed by a week so that Hollywood could 3-Dfy it in the name of the mighty dollar.

Talk about not bringing anything to the table and stealing a few extra bucks from paying moviegoers – so I say see it in 2-D and don’t be fooled by the goods that this one ain’t got.

My Rating **1/2

From Pandora to Transylvania

Terminator Salvation and Avatar made him, as I suspected, the hottest thing in Hollywood, and now Sam Worthington is negotiating a starring role in Dracula: Year Zero.

The summer 2011 tentpole reportedly will be helmed by I, Robot’s Alex Proyas. It will be a period picture tracing Dracula’s roots in Transylvania.

Up next for Worthington, though, is this spring’s Clash of the Titans and Last Night with Keira Knightley.
