Rutina Wesley (HBO’s True Blood) is up to bat now that she has landed a lead part on Queen Sugar, OWN’s forthcoming original drama series, which Ava DuVernay will write, direct, and executive produce.
Wesley will play Nova Bordelon, a New Orleans journalist and activist, whose life is upended after her spirited and affluent L.A.-based sister leaves California to claim what’s hers from her recently deceased father’s estate, which includes an 800-acre sugar cane farm in Louisiana.
Among her co-stars will be Oprah, of course. The Big O owns OWN, after all, and she will executive produce alongside DuVernay.
