Helen Mirren already has won an Academy Award for playing Queen Elizabeth II.
Next year, she just might take home a Tony.
Mirren will return to Broadway next winter, as the star of Peter Morgan’s The Audience.
Directed by Stephen Daldry, the play – which kicks off previews on Feb. 17 for a March 8 opening – will cover a great deal of the queen’s reign, back from the ’50s through today, and will put an imaginative twist on the oh-so-real conversations she and each of the dozen prime ministers elected during that period probably had at Buckingham Palace. (Morgan, btw, also wrote The Queen, which...you know.)
Mirren is reprising the regal role not only in general but for this particular incarnation.
See, she was nominated for an Olivier for her turn in a 2013 West End run of The Audience, so, yeah...the next Tony race should definitely include her.
