That is why, when time came for the new film Our Brand Is Crisis to get off the ground, George Clooney stepped aside as its star and asked Sandra Bullock, his Gravity leading lady, to step up to the plate and enjoy the spotlight.
A fictionalized account of the use of American political campaign techniques in the 2002 Bolivian presidential election based on a 2005 doc on the subject, the David Gordon Green-directed film has Bullock playing “Calamity” Jane Bodine, a retired political consultant summoned back into the fold to work on getting the Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada-esque Pedro Gallo (portrayed by Joaquim de Almeida).
Billy Bob Thornton co-stars as her antagonist, Pat Candy (a ringer for James Carville). Ann Dowd (HBO’s The Leftovers), Anthony Mackie, Zoe Kazan, and Scoot McNairy feature as well.
Our Brand Is Crisis will be in theaters on Oct. 30. Check out the trailer now.
