Cracking the Bell Jar

Break a leg, Kiki!

Kirsten Dunst, who is having a renaissance all her own these days thanks to her Emmy-nominated turn on FX’s Fargo and the big screen’s Midnight Special, is adding feature-film director to her résumé.

The actress is set to tackle an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar for her first foray behind the camera. American Pastoral’s Dakota Fanning will star as Esther Greenwood in the project, which Dunst co-wrote for the screen with new-to-the-scene Nellie Kim.

For those of us shamefully unfamiliar with the 1950s-set 1963 novel, Esther is a young woman who goes on an internship at a New York City magazine and then, upon returning home to Boston, suffers a mental breakdown.

Sounds like meaty material for a seasoned talent to take on at this stage in her long career.
