The Hamilton sensation is set to play a lamplighter named Jack in the project, which will be set 20 years after the events of the 1964 classic and – given that it will be based on P.L. TraversThe Mary Poppins Stories chronicle the character’s later travels.

Rob Marshall (Into the Woods) will direct for a Christmas Day 2018 release.

The new Depression Era-set film will center on a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with his tree kids, are visited by Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Together with Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder they are so missing in their lives.
