Preach & Rise

One of the most anticipated films of 2016 is finally previewable.

As is in say hello to the first trailer for The Birth of a Nation, kids.

Written and directed by star Nate Parker (Beyond the Lights), the film will tell the story of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher in the pre-war South, whose on-hard-times owner (Armie Hammer) accepts an offer to make Nat available to preach to unruly slaves. Given all the injustices and atrocities he witnesses, though, Nat decides to orchestrate an uprising to – fingers crosses – bring about freedom for his people.

The Birth of a Nation – which took both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year – will hit theaters in October.

Aja Naomi King (TV’s How to Get Away with Murder), Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller, Gabrielle Union, and Mark Boone Junior (FX’s Sons of Anarchy) co-star.
