Well This Sounds Promising...

So Ryan Gosling attended last months Cannes Film Festival, to introduce his directorial debut Lost River, f.k.a. How to Catch a Monster.

And the reception was kinda brutal.

Evidently, the line between being considered an original auteur and being considered a rip-off is a fine, fine one. And Gosling didn’t straddle it, as a first-time helmer, as well as he acts. Or so thought the critics at the Croisette.

The basic gist of what they said? RyGos has, in a first-rate folie de grandeur” (what...a backhanded compliment, huh!), borrowed way too much from filmmakers like David Lynch, Terrence Malick, and his own pal Nicolas Winding Refn for the good of the film, which they called baffling, indulgent, and a f---ed-up nightmare. Among other things.

Guess there’s only one direction in which he can go now, right?

Hey...but at least he still looks studly as ever. Clearly. And everyone was pretty much in runaway agreement about that one.

Lost River – a macabre fantasy about a single mother (Christina Hendricks) who watches as her teenaged son discovers a secret road to an underwater town – stars Iain De Caestecker (TV’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Matt Smith, Eva Mendes, and Saoirse Ronan. Check out the films beyond-tease-y teaser, and see if you think you’ll care to see it when it is released later this year.
